Lets say your hunting on the westside, where there are gates on just about all available property. The said gate is state land, you know this for a fact, there is a state timber sale boundry sign on the gate.A buddy of your logged it. The gate is open. There are no restriction signs whatso ever. Would you drive in and hunt, or would you walk and let other folks drive by you?

My luck, I'd drive in and when I came out the gate would be locked.

Hmmm...the only time I've been on the westside hunting was in the Winston. The gates were open on the weekend to allow hunters in the area, and closed on weekdays. Using that as my only reference...I think I'd still call somebody. But man, I don't know. There aren't any signs saying not to, so by logic, I'd guess you could drive in. But I don't know. Don't know what I'd do. If I knew the gate to always be open, I'd drive in. If it was the first time it had been open, I'd walk.

If I planned on hunting a location with gates; locked or unlocked, I would call ahead and make darn sure the unlocked gates were open to motorized vehicles before driving through.

There's always some dip*censored* that rips down no access sighs thinking it makes it ok to drive in. I would call the county.

If the gate was open, it wasn't posted and I knew it was state land I'd drive in...

I personally only know of one area that is state land that is walk in only. Most of the state ground down here is open year round, barring fire danger.

If there are no signs drive on, I run into this alot. I have a key that fits every state gate on either side of the mtns. and the looks I get when I drive into a walk in only hunting area. I am working behind such a gate right now, what amazes me is they are pissed at you when you drive by in the morning but at night want you to packem out to their rig. We also have problems with gates that are open for our trucks but are clearly marked logging traffic only at which point somebody will drive on in anyway and end up getting locked in.

If you are unsure it is better to find out first rather then have to deal with a situation later.

The said unit goes in about 1 1/2 miles, forks, both dead end. Then theres a old 4x trail that connect into another open road system. No active logging activity whatso ever. Guess any gate a feller went through could be locked when you came out.

I'd go with what logger said. That guy on the thread for your buck is just pissed and bitter because he didn't kill a buck.

If i know for certain that it was state land and also knew the gate was usually open then I would drive in, but if that gate was always closed one day and open the next then I would question why it's open and would probably not drive in and take a chance of getting locked in.

if its only 1.5 miles i would walk it regardless. It should only take 25 minutes or so.

Lots of state land that have gates that are open all year. Unless a cooperative road management system... I would drive in.

1 1/2 miles is nothing. Walk in and hunt. If the deer are use to rigs driving in, they will step into the brush and come out when there gone. Walking is the the best way to hunt. If you kill something and the gate is still open drive in and get it. If not take you bike back in to get it.

If there were no signs...or sign posts, I would drive in. If there are signs posted, on the ground or sign posts where the sign could have been torn off then I would walk even if it is state land.

There is a huge problem right now with quads up the C 9000 in the CF. It is signed no unauthorized motor vehicls but it doesn't matter if the gate it open or closed, the hunters continue to break the rules. I see it every day.

One thing that screws up people is that they don't realize that brush pickers can drive quauds in by permit and that makes them authorized. But because the pickers ride in the hunters think they can.

This same behavior has just recently gotten the Summit Lake side (state land) shut down to quads.

I should also mention that not all state owned land is accessible, it depends on who is managing it. For example there are large chunks of DOT land that hold deer, but they do not allow access.

I'm the same and actually even if a gate is open and you can drive I still often walk.....I just cannot see as much driving as I do walking. Not to mention my truck doesn't just zip down game trails the way my legs do

As I said, I stopped and snapped a few pics of the gate. There isn't any sign of signs anywhere. Hopefully, this will put some minds at rest, if not, so be it. They have a year to shut it up, and or post it, then I'll walk in. Until then, its fair game as near as I can tell. Another note, about halfway in, there is a main quad trail coming in thats just getting pounded. Any quad I see parked, someone will have a long walk out, cause quads ain't allowed.

Judd i would drive in no signs!! If u walk someone will drive passed you. Its not posted & its opened. If there where signs that said no motorized vehicles then i would walk. Vail only opens two gates.

the only thing that stands out to me is that all the gates I can think of off the top of my head open inward not outward

Hey 257WHBMag, werent you having a little arguement with someone on the site about this specific gate....Did these answers resolve the issue?

Better to handle questions like this one in a civil manner than otherwise...
