Out of State Hunts?
« on: January 03, 2008, 01:44:34 PM »
Where do you guys typically apply to hunt each year? I'm thinking of starting to apply/build points in Oregon, Idaho, Montana. Any other places I should consider?

You don't apply to build points in Idaho, at least not yet.  You buy to hunt.

Not everywhere in the state.  You do if you want to hunt 44 or 45, or some of the better units in the SE part of the state.  Just a few off the top of the head.

I always recomend Colorado, its over the counter. Lots and lots of elk in Colorado, last stats I saw were 270,000 statewide, lots of public land. Downside, the biggest bull I have ever seen MIGHT have been 300 with most being raghorns. They really seem to manage for quantity, not size. At least that seems to be the way it is where I hunt.

x2

You might be able to pull a Gen tag in your 1st year.  75% of the available non-res tags go to previous point holders and 25% of the tags go to the zero point holders.
You cannot apply for the points only option until July 1st thru Sept 30th though.  If you try for a draw then it's Jan 31st but you still get a point if not drawn of course.
You'll find a whole lot less people in the woods then you will in ID, MT or CO.

I really want to go on a guided horseback elk hunt.  It looks like it will take several years to get drawn for one of the good bull areas where there is a trustworthy guide here in WA.  So, I'm trying to find a guide in either Idaho or Oregon.   Any suggestions or warnings would greatly appreciated.

Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and WA. I use Idaho and Oregon for backups since there are plenty of good places to hunt with an over the counter tags.

What boneaddict was saying is that Idaho does not yet have a point system. Therefore, you do not apply every year simply to build up points.

Diane,

You might consider going to the Portland sportsmen's show next month. I've gone a couple times and there are several outfitters there that you can talk to about guided elk hunts, and the tags are guaranteed if you go with an outfitter, they're just double the price. One outfitter I've talked to, and heard good things about, is this one:  http://www.steens-packtrips.com/. They hunt in northeast Oregon which is nice as it's only half a day's drive from here.

Here is a link to the sportsmen's show:  http://www.otshows.com/PNWSS/pnwss.htm

Washington     (Big Whitetails) Got it
Oregon or Idaho    (Big Elk)NEXT
Wyoming     (Antelope of course, DUH)
Arizona     (Big desert Mule deer)

Really want to go to wyoming and arizona though, Might combine arizona and do a mule deer/antelope hunt. Only problem with that is its all lottery. My uncle is a guide down there and has all the ins and outs on the land........... only thing im waiting on is money

Thanks for the link Jackalope and the responses from everyone else. I'm just starting to do research on the topic since I'm not getting any younger and I'd eventually like to do some hunts outside the great state of WA.
