Muzzleloader recoil....
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:14:47 PM »
In your opinion, what caliber rifle recoil compairs to .50 muzzleloader recoil?

I have never shot a high powered rifle before, just .22 LR and 12 gauge shotgun.

it all depends on the amount of powder you use 80 grains=260 100grains=30-06 125grains=7mm rem mag
150=300 win mag is how i would lay it out for you also depends on bullet wait i have shot many weights and this is the scale that i think is the most representive across the boad to what recoil you will get out the gun. hope this helps

Yep, it also depends on the weight of the bullet that you shoot.  A 300g bullet with 100g of powder is going to kick about like your 12 gauge shooting a 3” mag shell.

here is another one for you 100grains=2 3/4" bb 125grains=3"bb 150grains=3 1/2" bb since you shoot a 12 gauge by my best guess

i am shooting .50 cal 295 grn powerbelts in front of 100 graisn of 777 and the recoil is a hell of a lot less then any of the multiple 30-06's i've shot. i would compare mine to a medium 12 gauge load...maybe like a 2 3/4 #6 pheasant load.

man you guys must be shootin some great padded guns, i have 4 30-06 and 2 muzzleloadrs and 3 12g's. i also shoot about 1000 Rd's of 12g from #9-oobuck, i shoot allot heavier bullet and like said, the more the bullet weighs the more Punch=more recoil.

my muzz rifle has the recoil pad that came with the gun from the factory...nothing special. i have 3 naught-6's right now. 1 kicks like a gawd damn mule, the other 2 are not bad as they are semi-autos. i have shot a couple other 06's and i still say my muzz is nothing compared to any '06 i've ever had the pleasure of shooting.
all i know is i was real surprised at the low recoil i got from my muzz.

I'll freely admit that I'm a big recoil weenie.  To me, black powder recoil is nothing like modern rifle recoil.  It's much more of a push than a whack.  Even with a crescent steel buttplate, my 54 cal with 100gr of 2f and a round ball is much more comfortable to shoot than my M70 Featherweight '06.

recoil is much different then a high powered rifle
it is more of a push than a punch

Last year I shot my T/C Black Diamond XR with 340 grain Dead Centers, pushed by 150 grains of 777 pellets. Having the sabot definantely helps to cut down on recoil in my mind (I used to shoot 385 grain buffalo bullets with 110 grains of 777 loose powder). The 150 grains steps it up a bit, but I find that it is a little flatter shooting.

I have a Wichester X-150 in 50 cal..... I shoot 130 gr of Pyrodex and it pushes a 295 gr Power Belt.... The kick imo is that of a 270 or so... I have the stock pad on as well.... Remember the heavier the rifle the more it will handle the kick..... The X-150 isn't the lightest gun out there by far.... Not the heaviest either.. But a perfect combo for me....
