Will someone here point out where he said he's got an Encore?  :bash:

Oh you have so many options!

Then again, it's not a bolt action repeater. It does not meet the 7.5 pound original requirement in the first post. :chuckle:

WOW this thread went way farther and faster than I imagined! let me tell ya what I think then you guys tell me what you think how s that? I think I want a remington model 7 in 300 wsm stainless synthetic, I think I want a 180 grain accubond pushed to about 2900 fps, sighted in 3" high @ 100. I also think I want a leupold vxIII 3.5x10. I have no idea really what this would weigh but I hope it would come in around my 7.5 lbs mark any thoughts?

sounds like you got the right idea, i would say about 8lbs is what the weight would be.

i just knew he had one, Steve...and as far as weight goes...mine is about 8 1/2lbs with a stainless bull barrel, sling, scope, etc.
as far as bolt action repeaters go...
1 shot 1 kill.

Steve, you forgot the venerable 243 WSSM! The bullets are fat little screamers, my wife calls them cute, lol.

That is unless you have fat fingers....then your SOL, LMAO

Actually I bought my son a Win, md 70 in 243 WSSM youth rifle. Pretty fun to shoot!

243 WSSM... Great Varmint or possibly Deer round.  Venerable?

Not an Elk or Bear round in my book.

Tell ya what... I'll let you throw a pebble at me as hard as you can from say 15ft.  Then let me throw a brick at you from the same distance. Unless you hit my eye or my left nut, I figure that brick, -even though it'll be moving slower, is gonna hurt you a lot more than that pebble hurt me.

Yes, an exageration. But you get my point.

I do appreciate little screamers... But I prefer something with a little more mass and terminal performance.  :chuckle:

My Tikka T3 weighs right at 7lbs while wearing a Leupold 3-9,an Uncle mikes sling and 3 rounds in the magazine.

Chambered in the boring ol' 30-06 it'll kill elk at 400yds all day long.

If you think you'll need a magnum chambering it'll still come in under 7 1/2 lbs.

no offence to the owners and i mean no disrespect but i really dont care for the feel of a tikka. and I really dont see the 30-06 as flat shooting enough for accurate 400 yard shooting. please dont see this as me bashing this grand old cartridge, Im not but when I say I want a gun that will kill elk to 400 yards I mean without 2 feet of hold over or without sightin 6" high @ 100 yards.

180s out of a .300 WSM don't shoot all that much flatter than 180s out of an '06. With a .300 WSM you're still looking at 20" of drop at 400. With an '06 you're looking at about 24". Thats assuming both rifles are about 1.5-2" high at 100 yds.

Don't think I'm bashing the WSM,I actually own one. It just doesn't do enough more than an '06 to put up with the added cost of ammo, muzzle blast, and recoil. My buddy wants the WSM real bad,so its going down the road.

If EVERY shot I took at an elk was 400 yds, then the WSM would be a better choice.

if every shot at an elk was 400 yards then a RUM would be in order. I am now thinking that I jst may purchase a 7mm mag barrel for my encore.

Well, I figure JDB's one of those that likes screamin LITTLE bullets that fly flat. I already suggested the 308 Norma, which is really a 338Winmag necked down to .30cal. (I shoot a 30-338 -which is a 338win necked down to .30cal) But that jumps away from his original request for something that won't rattle his teeth out when he shoots it. -Um uh... And a 7mag doesn't do that?

Didn't get a response from my Pebble vs Brick post.

I dont like little bullets, if I choose a .30 caliber I will be shooting 180 grain accubonds, if I choose a .284 it will be the 160grain. the recoil requirement aspect was only put in as I new people would recomend .340 roy's, 375 rum, and the like and I have now desire to own one of these cannon's. I currently shoot a .270 and it works just fine for everything i've ever hunted. Ive actually thought of just restocking it and continueing to hunt with it but jackalope's idea about an encore barrel really has me thinking of something in it. Basicly I love guns and love to talk guns and thought this would be a great way to spend the winter. tonight Ive read about the 280 ai and the 30-06 ai any opinions?
