Mt. Goat on the Snake
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:30:35 PM »
We had a jet boat deer hunting on the Snake river 3-4 mi. west of Lyons Ferry, first time in that area for us. On the South side of the river on a cliff ledge is this goat ??
2 1/2 days, same ledge...faces right ...faces left.. lies down following day...same routine.

any way may not be a surprise too you goat experts but I had know clue we would see a goat there.

Surprise to me and I've spent a fair amount of time out there. Very cool pic...I may have to head out there one of these days to see if I can spot him/some.

Kind of a surprising place to see a goat - weird.  Like you said, maybe other guys know about them.  I never heard of it, though.

I saw a 5 point bull when I was deer hunting out by Wawawai one time on the Snake.  Never even heard of an elk out there and could just see the tip of it's antlers in the brushy bottom of a draw when I was deer hunting.  Since I didn't expect to ever see an elk there, I had about a quarter second of having a heart attack before I could see the entire shape of the antlers.  With just the tips visible and not able to see the rest of the antlers or the body of the elk until I got my glasses on it, I had a really brief moment of thinking that I was looking at a 40 inch wide deer.  Literally a quarter second until I properly identified it, but thinking it was a deer my heart stopped, my stomach did a flip and I had to pick my lower jaw up off the ground and shove my eyeballs back in their sockets. :)  Maybe it wandered in from the Blues?

That one goat has been there for about 3 years. There has been rumor to move him closer th others. Oregon has been releasing some recently, this last spring the number released was 18.  They work there way north finding good habitat as move. Some stick others move on. We have been wathing #36 and #39 for awhile in my unit.  Not all still have their orange ear tags. Have pictures of one others are just white dots. It is fun to see them and the country they call home. I don't think they move far in winter.

ive hunted down there at ayer boat launch for the past 14 yrs.  i saw this goat about 5 yrs ago.  there is a cattle ranch right above him in the flats.  according to the cattle rancher the goat gets all swelled up when his cows come into heat.  he said that it got so bad one year that the goat was going through the fences.  so they loaded up the horses and went out and team rope the thing.  they didnt hurt the goat but they loaded into a stock trailer and hauld it back to the bluffs.  this is the gods honest truth.  just look for the two old cattle ranchers with huge mustaches and ask them about the goat.

There was a mountain goat hanging around east of the Dalles, Oregon.  Sometimes you could see him from 84.  He was collared and came from the Wallowas.  Last time I heard about him, he was wandering around some rock in Washington.  :dunno:

Can't decide if he got a crazy idea and swam the Columbia, or trotted across that railroad bridge right there.  :chuckle:

That is so weird I was fishing on the Klick last fall and there was a mountain goat above the fisher hill bridge about a mile from the mouth.  He was in the same general area every day.  I told some people about it and they said it had swam the columbia.  The story came from a reliable source, don't know how else it could have gotten there, cool to see though.

I seem to remember a thread about the Klick goats last year. There's also the goat at the mouth of Dead Canyon. Boy that would be crazy to jump deer hunting. God goats are wierd.

I wonder if that was the Dalles goat.  Sure are weird creatures.  I guess when they get it in them to go somewhere, they just go.

I heard that the wdfw tried to establish a goat heard a few year ago. Didn't give it much thought until I read this post. That's sure enough a goat.

This one isn't so weird I don't think but I saw a couple a few years back up the Rattlesnake Creek drainage, right where the North Fork and the main stem come together. It was during late archery and there was a lot of snow up high. I was glassing a hillside for deer and almost looked right over them assuming they were patches of snow.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

I was just below Darling Mtn side hilling some nasty crap.. A rock slide....  :bash:  In a very heavy snow storm.... Come around a bend and ten feet from me is Billy.... I was like HOLY F!!!... And he was walking toward me...  I started to back up and get my 43 ready at the same time.... Got back to where the rocks about ended.. This thing rounds the corner and keeps coming at me.... Looking at me like why are you on my trail!!!! I wanted nothing to do with him at this point...Who would believe that you had to shoot a billy in self defense... So I tried to run up the hill as fast as I could wile keeping an eye on him... I fell and figured this was it.... He just pick up his pace and walked right by me at ten feet or so.... Looking at me like dumb ass!!!! And I'm all breathing hard and sweating... He was cool goat.... I named him Scary.... See him every now and then around Eagles Nest...
