I figured that was direction you were going but just wanted to clarify.  Like I said this, this is a great site and  until I found it, I was total oblivious to these types of sites.  I've never been much of a computer wizz so I am still getting the hang of it.  I really appreciated the tips that were given to me but I completely understand where you are coming from.

I agree and appreciate the tips and info on this website. Some of us can't travel around as much as we'd like to scout the different GMU's and this website offers a lot of good information from those who are able to get out there and scout. I'll gladly pitch in for gas or chop firewood in repayment for any info that gets me into some shooter bucks! Thanks again! :chuckle:

Good point Phool, for the guys that have the means to do it.  One of the guys that works for me called me at 4:00pm and told me he just saw 2 big bucks with a herd of does.  (Then again, he doesn't hunt and he's from Arkansas, so they could honestly have been a couple of 3X3 mulies ;))
But the point should be well taken; if you want to see what survived the season in your hunting spot (mule deer anyway), go look now.  It will really open your eyes to how many crafty old bucks are never taken.  A lot of us think we know our hunting areas cold, and that we scouted them to death, and that nothing could have survived that modern firearm season onslaught, but November is the reality check...

there's only a couple good units so anyone wishing to apply to those should easily be able to scout them out right now...I know I don't need money so I quit work and am going to fill my tank with dirt and go scout out the only good units in the state and then apply next year in the hopes that my points that increase my odds from 1% to 2% of drawing will get me a tag so that I can go hunt those units....with the closest one being 5 hours away....I'm also disconnecting my internet service because utilizing technology and using the internet as a method of scouting is considered lazy and unethical     :hello:

So my question is, "Is it not OK to ask for help or tips on this site

Absolutely patton1!!!  Everybody loves to help out, the point is there are people that apply for permits every year that have never been in the areas they apply for. Instead they wait until they find out they have drawn and then rely on everyone else to tell them where to go.

The point of the thread was that right now is the perfect time to hit those units you apply for or want to hunt, before you find out you draw, so you will know where the animals are at in those units and you're not walking around blind and relying on others.

Yeah, right. We're supposed to guess which four units we'll apply for next year, and then go scout them all. Hoping to someday draw one. That makes lots of sense.

If you don't like to share info, that's your perogative, but I think you may be confusing laziness with common sense.

Step once, look twice...

Good topic Phool. Any of you had any trouble with the tag holders getting upset with you out scouting/photographing while they are out trying to fill a tag? I'm heading over east again this week to scout out a few areas and try to find a buck I saw during elk season. A few days ago saw some guys who were out hunting with a late tag and they seemed a little annoyed I was out hiking around without a tag. I did not encounter them in the field (on the drive out) and they stopped me to talk. Nice guys just seemed a little bothered there were people in the same area not hunting.

Well how about this, I don't want people to just toss me in a honey hole; but I would like some help with scouting and just getting out. I don't mean during the season either, year round just to get out. A lot of the guys I used to hunt with just head to their cabin and booze it up at night and walk around during the day. Don't get me wrong, they get some nice animals. I am a recovering alcoholic and don't need to be around that. Plus my kids are getting into hunting with me and I don't want them getting it in their head that hunting is just a boozer trip. We have a couple places I am trying out for late archery for my daughter and I but next year I would like to have a better plan set up. This site has been great help for me and all the folks on here have been great. My kids are great motivation, now I just need help in direction. Next year the pressure will be on, my youngest daughter is on my heels to take hunters ed. The oldest took it at 10 so she feels she can also. So I will have 2 hunters counting on me to get them in the game. Anyway, thanks for all the help you guys have given.

You're the type of person I'm talking about. You expect to sit home and surf the internet for the all the info you need before applying for a tag, then once drawn expect everyone else to tell you all about it.

If you apply for units next year that you have never scouted out, you have nobody else to blame when your plea for info comes up empty because you instead chose to surf rather than hike. :twocents:

I have no problem sharing info with those that have shown they are willing to do the due diligence it takes to get it done. If you think otherwise I'm sure there are a couple people on this site that will vouch for me about giving out info to help them on their hunts. :twocents:

I don't have the time or money to go scout out eastside GMU's that I may never hunt. I'll wait until I draw a unit, then I'll do the research and scout it. Right now there is too much going on, why would I go on a scouting trip? There are pheasants, chukar, ducks and geese to hunt. Next week, Thursday through Sunday I'll be hunting blacktail deer. November 25th to December 15th is muzzleloader elk.

So where is the time to scout all these units I may never draw? Even if I could afford the gas, I don't have the time. I drew the modern firearm Entiat mule deer permit in 2004. Had never set foot in the unit until then. Ended up with a very nice buck that scored 162 something.

I agree people should be able and willing to do their own scouting and not be spoon fed all the info required to hunt an area successfully. But I see no reason to say that people should not apply for units they have not previously scouted.   That's just nothing but   :bs:
