External fogging and rain

I know one thing for sure, my next set of bino's is going to have some sort of rainguard feature! Is very frustrating to have the outside lens fog over when you're looking through them because you're hot from hiking up steep hills. Or not being able to look through them due to rain. Yeah, used the lens covers even and still had that issue.

Don't care if they are cheap even, cause cheapies you can see through work better than fogged up or rain covered lenses 10x the price and quality.

Does that repel water so you don't constantly need to dry the lenses? Might be a cheap solution...

thanks

I came across a very good discussion on this subject. Hopefully, this will be helpful.

Rain Guard and its equivalent repellent coatings will do little if anything for external fogging.  They will keep oily substances from adhering, making cleaning easier, and they tend to bead water into small droplets that tend to then run to the outside of the lens.

External fogging is an issue of either breathing on the lens, a result of great temperature differences, having the lens too close to your face when you are perspiring, or having a lot of humidity in the air.  Use a lower power glass with longer eye relief that keeps the oculars away from you face a little more.

I have heard good things about Cat Crap (lord what a name!).  But DO NOT USE RAIN-X.  That will destroy optical coatings so fast you won't know what happened.
