Youth regulations

So starting next year, I have a nephew that is going to be 10 and we are planning on getting him in on the action. He has gone along for the last few years and enjoyed it and started asking this year about when he was going to get to hunt. I know it used to be that for youth hunters it was any buck in most eastern mule deer units, is this still the case? I looked briefly through the regs but didn't notice anything.

as far as i know youths follow the same rules on east side mule deer as we all do.

Same rules for general as everyone else on mule deer, there are special general hunts for whitetail in certain units and there are some good permits for youths to put in for covering both mulies and whitetails..

thats what i was thinking too buckmark. to bad washington isnt like oregon in the way they do their youth hunts

in some of the S.E. blue mountains units youths can shoot whitetail does but bucks, whitetails or mule deer, are all 3 pt. minimum....same goes for the N.E.

Its 3pt or better over here for everyone now for mulies. some dads were shooting deer,  "i mean the kids were" for meat in the freezer. that got put to a stop and hurt some good youth hunting the year before i started hunting. it happens. they can shoot any whitetail buck. and its really good odds for youth permits though. good luck.

 I still think we need F&G to come up with a 2 point hunt. I ended up tagging what essentially is a huge 2 point with a sticker. He had 5 1/2" bases that carried all the way to the forks, also had 23" mains. I believe he had been passed for several years because of his genes, allowing him to get to that size, and unfortunatley for him, grew that sticker this year. All this and the day before I had a larger 2 point in my crosshairs.

 This has been brought up before, and I realize that this wouldn't keep young 2 points with the 4 point genome from being taken, but I really believe these large 2's need to be taken out of the pool, and what a great way to do it.

 F&G could really help their image a bit and at the same time help control this every increasing issue, if they came up with something like this for kids.

I agree...there are A LOT of large 2 points. Does anyone think it's an Okanagan thing or is it all around the eastside? I notice it a lot in Conconully, when and IF you ever see a buck..

I saw several in 101 that were huge.  Definately need to be culled.

That's a great idea! I have been seeing more and more big slick two points. My girls and I stalked one and then watched him for a while that was over twenty inches wide with heavy dark antlers. He looked to be at least four years old to me. He was already chasing and spreading the two point genes around.

Completely agree with a two point draw hunt for youth...there are alot of  big twos being cultivated in all of the east side units.  Would be a great opportunity for a youth hunter to get his first set of horns...
