my wifey wants a shotgun.....hhmmm
« on: November 12, 2009, 01:27:14 PM »
well my wife and I have been doing a bit of trap shooting the last few years and she really enjoys it...and this last year she went through hunters safety, and now has all here licenses and tags to hunt anything with a shotgun....but has no shotgun... well she saved up from all her overtime at work and has about 550 dollars to spend... now here's the question ....what will 550 dollars buy you...?....   she wants it in 12 ga.  at least 3 inch ... and is undecided on pump or semi-auto....(but I like semi-autos)...     hhhhmmmm so what should I suggest???

Find another $550 and get her a Benelli Montefeltro.
(and you thought i was gonna say Browning..)

For that price you might be able to find a Remington 11-87.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I have a really nice Wingmaster in 12 guage, in 2 3/4" that I would be willing to sell for a great price. Almost new condition, only been hunted with once.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

Remember, first and foremost, shotguns are all about fit.
Dont matter what it is, if it dont fit you wont hit..
If you were closer i would let you have her shoot my other halfs 11-87 and then her montefeltro.. Big difference..

hey thanx for the input...she has shot the 11-87 ...that's my gun  :)...she seems to think a little lighter would be better for those days that end up with us "just taking the shotguns for a walk" as she refers to it...so I might shy away from the 11-87 just cuz its kind of a tank ... is the 1100 a lighter gun...hhmmm benelli you say...I think the cost is the issue there...

Yep, Benelli Montefeltro, have her hold, mount and swing one, compare it next to the beretta or others if you can (the beretta is a great gun).
I think you'll see why i say the Benelli.
Head on down to cabelas there in post falls and put one on layaway with a 550 down payment.. Or if there is another place you like around there that has it.
This would be a shotgun she will own for life and the price of the Benelli is really not that much if you think in those terms.
The Benelli, Beretta 391 and browning golds are what they use in argentina for doves and they cant break them..

i must concur with the "it must fit you" montra.  as an avid shotgunner i can give first hand knowledge that if the shotgun does not fit the shooter it will prove to a miserable outting.

i would strongly reccomend finding a gun that is within her requirements of the gun, light, 3in. chambers etc. etc. that fits.  it may take a little longer to save the cash for a properly fitting gun but trust me it will be well worth the wait and extra dough.  it may even save money in the long run by not purchasing an ill-fitting gun and have to buy another in a year or two.

been there done that,
steve

While not as upscale mossberg makes a nice hunting shotgun in the grand slam turkey series or the 535, . Full camo, shorter barrel is available, any barrel is available, semi or pump, pistol grips, adjustable stock, basically whatever you want, and has very nice sights.

There is also the Bantam youth that weighs in at 5.25lbs and has adjustable butt pads.

I think Remington has a similar model for about the same cost.

I have the 835 and so does a friend, we are both very happy. But there are of course better options as the 835 ulti mag is a bit on the heavy side at 7 3/4 lbs.
Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

I'm a browning shotgun guy through and through. I'd at least look at them. I own 3 BPS shotty's and love them. Don't own a semi but if I did it would be a Browning Gold.

Find a nice 870 and go hunting.  They are great guns, reliable, lighter than autoloaders, and can be modified for any shooting situation, by adding a different barrel.  Plus there is a plethora of stocks to put on it, from wood to synthetic.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

well we found a couple of 870s for 221 bucks in 3 inch....and the wifey likes the weight and feel so we are gonna go pick one up for her in a couple days... and with the extra coin she saved we bought the other choke tubes and a cleaning kit and a few other goodies ...including a few more boxes of shells...so I am happy with it...thanx for all the great input, the 870 really is the gun that fits her best, she couldn't hit a thing with my dads benelli super black eagle, but with my dads 870 she was right on every time...so that's what we are going with...
