Why do bears smell so bad
«
on:
November 13, 2009, 02:31:39 PM »
Buddy called after work he shot a bear and it was in a deep hole. So called the wife told her i was going to go help him get it out. I ended up gutting it out for him he was going to slow from the smell. O Ya, it smelled like nothing i have smelled before. Both of our first experience with a bear. WHY SO STINKY???

picture your dog that needs a bath in a bad way and is kinda stinky...
now take that and consider a bear has never had a bath.

I haven't really noticed that they smell that bad, maybe it's because I smell worse?

What stunk?
The hide, the meat or the guts? Don't cut open the gut bag.
I have only smelled one bear that was nasty...and it was puking nasty. That was on POW and it was eating fish. All the WA bears I have been involved with had no smell or only a slight wet dog smell. Nothing nasty like a rutted bull or worse.

Gutpile, You might want to take the fur off before you roast them over a fire.
