Calls for the Late season.....

Ok so i have a few diaphram calls that I am learning how to use and a slate call and a owl locator?  ..... and i was wondering what people use and what gets the best response during the late season.....


Also can anyone tell me what the hell an owl locator does for turkey hunting and how do you use it?

i keep hearing about the Kee Kee run but havent been able to find one to check it out.

it is a sound, not a kind of call or brand name of call. it's a sort of regrouping call. it's a must know in the fall season.
calling and hunting turkeys in the fall is waaaayyyyy different than spring hunting keep in mind.

Just pick the turkey sound you want to learn, listen, and then practice, practice, practice both the rythmn and inflections.

An owl call is a locator - many times the birds will "shock" gobble to a locator call and give up his location without starting the game (ie - start coming into a turkey call).  This allows you to close some distance and get setup before starting the game. I prefer crow and peacock, but an owl call can work early and late in the day.

I use kee-kee-runs, hen assembly calls, gobbles, and gobbler yelps during the fall season to good success. During the spring breeding season hen calls will work because its breeding season, but not so much during the fall.  Also helps if you can scatter the flock, then setup at the breakpoint ... however, if you're by yourself you will usually only push them in one direction versus scattering them to the four winds.

probably all 7. you could have 47 calls in your pocket, you need to know how to make the sounds with them. thats the important part.

First you have to have located a flock to break up.  If you know where birds like to hang in the fall, you can attempt to break up the flock a number of ways.  I've never done this on purpose but I've seen it work in videos, etc.  Mabye Strut or somebody else has been successful at this?

well i am planning to come over to spokane area for turkey. i just not sure the best approach.

Not to jack this thread or anything but the fall season isnt a season in which you would be doing much calling. The birds arent mating like in the spring. their just in big numbered flocks. Ive heard of people just findin a flock of birds and pretty much huntin them like pheasants. But good luck man.

I hunt fall seasons with good success.

Busting a flock by one person is hard to near impossible, because they will normally flush in one direction and you need a good scatter to be successful ... two or more guys rushing from different directions can yield great results.  Sometimes a secondary or even third scatter is required if the first one or two didn't disperse all the birds in every direction.  Then set up, wait 30 - 40 minutes, and start with the kee-kee-runs (&/or hen assembly calls) to get the hens , jakes, and jennies back in.  It should be noted that the gobblers will usually be gone by then ... using gobbles and/or gobbler yelps within 10 minutes of the scatter is usually required to bring them back in.  Note also I usually will not use this method because I hunt in fall by myself, not as fast as I used to be, their eyesight and hearing are to good, and usually I get a flush versus good scatters.

I think the best thing you can do is observe the birds to see where they are roosting, flying down to, where they go during the day, how they return to the roost, etc (they are creatures of habit if nothing disturbs them). You can setup an ambush by just being where they want to go and being patient. You can also call using kee-kee-runs (&/or hen assembly calls) to get hens and their young, or gobbles and gobbler yelps to get the big boys to come in. I use this method very successfully each fall since I have patterned the birds' routines. I can sit in my three man pop-up blind on a tripod stool (or chair-in the-bag), and keep warm by my 5000 BTU pesto-lighted propane heater.  I've had over 300 birds come to the blind and start launching over the top from approx 4 feet or less while I'm protected from over a foot of snow and the strong cold winds (just so comfy). If I don't get them at one location, I'll go to the next location and wait them out there .... then the next location as needed ... eventually I will get the bird(s) I want.

i have never used it in washington state, but being from back east. we would locate a flock the evening before the opener usually while bowhuntng. someone would see a flock roost. and we would scatter them out of the roost in early morning. good solid yelping on a box call and keekee run on a diaphram was magic.like mentioned before the key is to get a good scatter in all directions. i would sit down right at the scatter point give them a good 30 min . u will herar them start calling trying to flock back up. be ready because alot of tmes they come in on a run. even had them fly in before.   thanks for your time strut

   I was going to say it was like grouse hunting, just walk up and shoot one.  They are in flocks of 100 to 400 right now.

Hubby and I are headed out for our first fall season tomorrow morning ....thanks for all the tips! One of my husbands buddies was out for last day of deer yesterday and said he heard a TON of turkeys "talking" back & forth. Never stalked out the flock, but they were close...hoping they're still in the vacinity tomorrow!!
