It's always nice hunting out of a good blind, but if you build one on public land everyone is entitled to reap the rewards of your hard work.  In my younger years I built many good blinds on public land when the hunting was slow.  Unfortuantely it becomes a race to get there, I now try to bring portable blinds or quick set type blinds so, my various spots don't get over hunted.  I usually throw in my aqua pod and a final approach blind in my boat, so I am set for the various spots.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Lol this thread made me laugh...i guess your friend who built that blind doesn't know what the word public means. Here is a definition to the word: not private; open to or concerning the people as a whole.
Ruger brought back the .220, i just shoot it.

You were the one out of line.  Washington state law is first come first serve for blinds on public land.  If you need a blind that bad, get a portable and carry it with you.

If they left their gun in the parking lot on the ground I'd call that a dumb move. First come, first served to the finder.

Yeah..the whole first come first served..with a "found" gun would be all fine and dandy until for some reason the serial number got ran and it was reported stolen. I don't know I firmly believe that if you find something you try your best to get it back to the owner and it will some day come back and benefit you!!

I wouldn't say he was out of line. It doesn't hurt to express the fact that he had built it and put some hard word into it. When I pull up on a pre-built blind somewhere I am respectful to the fact that someone else built it, and if they show up, I basically plan to share it.. if they push hard enough, I may even leave. I realize that the law says first come first serve, but sometimes ethics and the law aren't the same thing.

however, this is ultimately the reason why I am shopping for land. By the time my boy is old enough to go hunting with me there won't be any land worth hunting anymore and he'll have to camp in the blind the night before.

I knew a guy that had a nice blind he built that became a popular spot...so he built an even better blind on the other side of the lake, completely wind proof with built in benches, it was so nice that the people that always went to his favorite spot started going there and he was able to go back to the spot he preferred even though the blind wasn't as good...it was his favored location..........   the whole sign thing kinda reminds me of when I pulled up to a lake and saw private property and no tresspassing signs all over the public ground...or on the little islands I like to hunt.... I usually tear them down... its kinda lake saying I've got dibs on this spot forever...bogus... :bdid:     :)

I understand Shadowcat where you're coming from! That is what has us wanting to build blinds, but we don't like the thought of building them on public land. But like I told you first come first serve. So lets get my boat in the water and go build our blind where it is boat access only! Remember how many times we wanted certain blinds elsewhere but got there to late!! Or we can buld some small blinds that they might take rather than that one!! Love ya bro lets go kill some birds!!!!! :IBCOOL: :hunter: And if I was that kids dad I'd kick his ass from here to next week and would never let him use a gun in my house LOL! :twocents:
Hunting and Fishing is not what I do. But who I am...

Some of you just are not connecting the dots here. You are so focused on the word permission. Like I said, it may have been the wrong word to use. The guy who built it knows it is on public land and that it is first come first serve. He also wants to know who is using it and has developed some good contacts to hunt with. For him, it was a good way to develop those contacts because they were doing the same thing he likes to do: DUCK HUNT! Other wise, they would not have been in the blind.

Now, this is where I am going to put my foot down on the subject. I have taken a load of crap from a few of you and you do not know the first thing about me. Yes, I said they were kids, I am in my mid 40's and they are in their mid 20's. That to me is a kid, but still old enough to be responsible enough to know where the hell their gun is and to ASK his dad to use it! If he doesn't have the respect for his dad to ask to use it, then I doubt that is a person you want out in the boonies with a gun because you can't TRUST that person.

That goes to the testament of the attitude they displayed to me, I never swore to or at them and was very polite to them. They smarted off to me and THAT changed the dynamics of the situation. I doubt  that very many of you would have allowed someone to be swearing at you with out you saying something back to them in kind. I would have been very happy to make a new friend and share the blind with someone until they "stand up for themselves", as it was pointed out, by swearing at me. I doubt they could have used the excuse that I "intimidated" them, as it was suggested, and that is why they were upset and left the shotgun in the parking lot. We had talked for almost thirty minutes before they walked back to the parking area, yet another thirty minute walk. We had both apologized to each other for what was said and put it behind us and went on to talking about other duck hunting things. So, so much for what you know. You were not there nor do you have the whole picture.

You can not sit there and tell me for one moment that if you had worked to build something that you would not expect to be able to use it when you went out. I have read a very common thread here. I have seen a lot of "me, me, me" in your replies. Example, "The sign on public property is nothing more than litter, I would dispose of it as such", or "I would probably be pissed off enough I would throw away the paper with the phone number." I think that is what has gone wrong with hunting these days. It isn't much different than the whining the tribes make over hunting and fishing. It is all about them and to hell with what anyone else has done. That attitude does nothing to foster working together or networking for the benefit of our sport. It pits us against one another in a race for "it's either him or me and it isn't going to be me" and that attitude does NOTHING for helping our sport. It drives a wedge between us. I was brought up to be respectful of others, their property and the things they do and say.

BTW it is illegal to erect a building (blind) on public land without permission.  The WDFW went around and tore down a few blinds out this way a few years back.

Just a FYI.  Both of you were in the wrong.  You for assuming you have rights over another in a public blind and them for not being ethical hunters.

For me, if someones in "my" spot I move on without confrontation.  It's out of respect for that persons hunt, whether or not I built the blind or not.

There are other blinds in the area that have been there for a number of years. This one has been there for two years now.
