Banded Hen
« on: November 14, 2009, 04:18:22 PM »
Picked up a banded hen this am.  Banded in British Columbia 8/14/2009.  A migrator.   :)
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Don't they all migrate?
After further investigation it apears that many do at some point in the year.  Some of the migrators may become localized and some of the locals make migration trips in various directions.  My first duck band of this season was banded in Oregon and migrated up north.

Usually between point A and point B.  Today I was hunting at point A.   :P

The northerns do or migrators.  The locals stick it out,

A lot of our local birds migrate south as well, some birds even migrate north in the fall.  I once got a hen mallard on the Snohomish in November that was banded in Northern California  three months earlier.

Banding studies have shown that many local bird populations, waterfowl and songbird, shift their their ranges south even if their local habitat is still supportive of wintering populations of birds.
