Whitetail success.... (added new pics)
« on: November 14, 2009, 06:27:10 PM »
I went over for the late Whitetail archery hunt for the 1st time this year.  A good friend of mine has been doing it for years with some great success.  I've been a long time Blacktail guy and I've spent quite a bit of time chasing the Muley's but never the Whitetails. He finally talked me into giving it a try. I had it in my mind there were going to be deer running under every tree, my perception was wrong.  It took me a few days to even find some good sign with active scrapes.  Since I had never taken a Whitetail I told my buddy I was going to shoot the 1st 3 point that presented a shot, I just wanted to break the ice.  On the 3rd day of the hunt about 1 hour before dark I was sitting in my stand and I felt the wind change, I was bummed it was going right where I expected the deer to come from.  I'm not a big believer in scents but I dumped a little Primos "Truth Serum" on a limb and about 5 minutes later this little 3 point came running into my spot, he stopped 10 yds in front of my stand and rubbed a little alder.  I settled the pin and let it rip, he ran 10 yds stood there for a few seconds and dumped over 20 yds from my stand.  He's not a monster by any standards but I'm pleased to get my 1st whitetail.  I think I'm going to be hooked, I can't wait for next year to see if I can begin to figure these guys out.

The next day my hunting partner called me, he said he had just shot a good buck but it was snowing like crazy so he wanted to see if i would help him look for him.  By the time I got to his stand he had already found him, he made a great shot but was worried because the snow covered the blood trail. He told me he had shot a decent 3 point...that "A" hole  :chuckle: had shot a great buck. If you count the eye guards he's a 5 x 7 19" wide, looks like he'll score somewhere around 145.  I don't have a good picture, I'll have to get his field pics another day...sure makes my buck look dinky.

both are very nice!

Thats no dink buddy...looks good to me...Ive put 7-8 WT's on the wall that were around that size..and Im looking at one right now thats smaller ;)

as for ur buddies...damn   very nice!

ps- if its a WT you count the eye guards...

on a WT we typically call em brow tines not eye guards...

and if its those sick ass eye guards ur buddy's deer has...count em twice ;)

congrats to both of u

Well done!! Not a bad way to start your whitetail career.  Hopefully we find something similar in a couple weeks.  Wish I was already going over.

Awesome hunt!  Congrats on your first whitetail - a great buck in any camp.  Congrats to your friend for dragging you out of the ferns to try something new.  His buck ain't too shabby either.
