Wyoming Deer
« on: November 14, 2009, 06:34:44 PM »
Little story and pictures from my Wyoming buck hunt.

Went for the deer hunt after Mt. and Wy. antelope hunts. Up in the NW corner of the state, a place I've been to a few times now. Lots of deer in the area, it gets better when the mountains get piled up with snow, as so many places do.

Got there and set up camp,

First morning out I ran into 6 wolves (in other Big Game) and only saw a few does.

Over the next several days found and area that had several bucks and a couple of good decent ones. Getting close seem to be a problem as they were staying up in old burn areas and only pretty wide open below them.

Comes Saturday and I know there will be more people in and I'm in the area with the bucks plenty early and they are still there at about 470 yards, 6 of them. I start working my way up through the open area slowly and all of a sudden off to my right are 2 people walking up the middle of the clearing, looking at the deer. I see that looks like they are going to try and come around from the right. So time for me to hurry up things before it gets all screwed up. So I move up some more and the deer don't seem to mind, as I'm sure they could see me. I get to 370 and say this is close enough. Get the sticks out make sure I've got the right one and boom with my 243, he drops like a rock, spine hit. He starts to get up on his front legs and I'm about to put another one in him and down he goes rolling over. He's done. Get up to him and am very pleased with him.

Later that day a guy stops by that I have met before and he wanted to see what I had got. He said when I shot it scarred the S@#% out of him as hadn't seen me and I was pretty close to them.

While I was taking care of him there was another shot about a 1/4 mile away and alright somebody else got one of the others. Met the guys later that day and they asked how mine compaired to theirs, as mine was still a couple hundred yards from the trail. I told them a little better. They said someone had already shot theirs, look at the horn. I took a look and said theirs my missing Barnes a from a couple days ago perfectly embedded in the horn at the 1st. Y . Knew it was a long poke, but though I'd try. With the shot the deer (2) jumped about 40 yards and went back to feeding and watched them for another 1/2 hour till it was too dark. They said "you got him" and I said you have a souvenir.

That is a nice buck, congrats.

The older I'm getting the more I enjoy my comforts. I spend quite a bit of time out there by myself and the TV entertainment helps pass the time alone.
