deer or elk hunting conundrum
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:36:17 AM »
seems that my partner and I have found ourselves in a pickle. we have drawn the antlerless "B" tag for gmu 133. we have private property to hunt on. this gives us the chance to harvest a whitetail 3pt min or doe and any antlerless deer.

part two is we also have a place to camp on private property inside the stella unit gmu 504 for elk. this gives us a good opportunity at an antlerless or 3pt min bull. what would you do?

Head east to fill my doe tag and then head west to fill my elk tag.

the hitch in the decision making is, is 4 deer that is almost a gaurantee equal to a chance at 2 elk?

will be leaving seattle on thurs 25th and coming home monday 29th. drive times to each unit from home. gmu 133  6 hours, gmu 504 2.5 hours. if we go to 133 we will lose approx 2 days due to travel but almost a sure bet on 4 deer. lose one morning hunt to go to 504. never have hunted 504 but have 2 days of scounting in so far and it looks good.

That's a tough one. I'd almost have to go with the deer hunt, since you drew permits, it would be a shame not to use them. Also like you say, you're almost sure to come home with meat. The elk hunt's not a sure thing. Too bad you can't do both. Maybe you can hunt Stella later? Isn't it open till the 15th of December?

What weapon?

If archery, I would go for the deer, fill the tags. Night comes early now so travel at dark and hunt durring the day.
2.5 hour drive, sounds like weekend warrior for the rest of the season to me. i would do that (and do) for weekend. I know where i am hunting and where i am staying so travel in the evenings so i can get all the day lite hunt in i can is priority #1 for me.

I will either leave the evening before or very early the morning of the hunt. Drop camp (park the truck and camper)and hunt the morning. Set up after the morning hunt.

You should go on the deer hunt and hook me up with the Stella spot, I'll let you know what you missed! ;)

hunting with a muzzleloader and It is not really about the meat for me as I already have my moose cow from B.C in the freezer. we are trying to get one for my partner though. first elk down is his. we would divy up any deer we get but he would end up with the lions share. although I would really like to have meat to "play " with this year (sausage, pepperoni etc

If you don't mind driving, I don't see why you can't do both.  That is what I would probably do.  You should be able to fill 4 doe tags over there in quick order.

If it's not for the meat then I'd definitely go on the deer hunt. More shooting, more fun! And, easier packing a deer out than an elk = less work
