2009 Spike Elk Hunt Success
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:33:42 AM »
I enjoy seeing spike elk pictures whether they are up or down, so thought I'd share.  This was my first elk taken on the run...from 80 yards placed it right behind shoulder, blew out both lungs and shattered opposite leg on departure.  Spike was third in line of five elk, with a 5x5 and 4x4 in the lead and followed by two cows.  1959 Winchester 300 H&H Mag has been good to me.  The Federal VitalShok 180 grain lodged in hide of opposite leg in perfect mushroom shape for souvenir.  I always hate killing 'em but sure love the tasty meat.  Hunt day before was delayed putting out a forest fire that looked to be started by cigarette or hunter's small warming fire day prior.  Ughh!  Elk ran right by me on ridge as I was shoveling ash with a large piece of bark.  Ughh again!  Still, I feel timing on my side as it may have prevented burn down of entire slope of hillside I've enjoy hunting for 10 years.  I'm not much of a poster, but here goes the attempt at adding pictures.  Enjoy.
