New pups first bird!
« on: November 16, 2009, 07:54:04 PM »
Went out on Saturday to the release site near Stanwood.  Saw quite a few birds.  My new chocolate lab Lucy is 4 1/2 months old and she finally got her nose on a bird.  This wasn't her first hunt but the first time she's actually gotten birdy for me.

Thanks everyone.  We had to put our old lab down in August so it was time to get a new lab in the house.  Taking her out again tomorrow.

where is that site?  I like to jump around and hunt different areas.... but didn't know there was one around stanwood...  i mean if it's your secret spot you don't have to give it up...

i can think of two close to stanwood, one is smith farms on hwy 532 on the way out to camano island... the other WAS whylie slough but its all tidal now so... smith farms is the only one i know

Tex-X The release site is between Stanwood and Camano Island on SR532 like Elliot said.  It's called Smith farm or Leque Island release site.  Nice site but does get crowded from 8 am till 9:30.  The NAS Whidbey site is obviously on Whidbey Island and I think you still have to contact the base to get permission or to register to hunt.  Might have changed since I was up there last a few years ago.  Hope to see you out there, look for my pup!

for the base you can actually call and get permission now...   the base is good hunting if you get there earlier after 9:00 it's pretty much a bust because everyone has dogs that will bump the birds into the extremely thick stuff...  in the afternoon it's descent once the birds start coming back out... thanks for the tip...
