Chewuch late A tag little buck
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:07:35 PM »
First I have to thank my oldest son CJ who has been hunting with me since the age of 9 and is 20 now  and was going to use as much of his  vacation  as needed to get me a deer and I could not have done this without him and my other son Justin. I have never taken  a deer bigger than a  2 point so when I was drawn for the late Chewuch A tag I knew I had a good chance of getting my best deer ever. From the people I talked to they all said find the does and you'll see Buck's and don't shoot the first 1 you see  but we soon found out that  there was not enough snow yet to have pushed the big Buck's down  and all the Buck's down low were small 3x3’s and smaller and that's all we saw  the 1st weekend  the 7th & 8th. So my wife and I and 2 boys went back Fri. her and Justin would stay the weekend  and CJ and I were staying all week if needed. Sat we started  at the Gunn ranch rd. and started walking and glassing again only thing there were sporks and 3x3’s. So having  gotten a message from Wea300mag  by the way thank you Mag. during the week  so we decided  to go higher up to the snow line. Sat. night we all took a drive looking for does which we found  high on the south facing  slopes again only small Buck's but  more tracks in the snow  also as we came back down we noticed that it got 5 degree's colder  in the valley  than up where the deer were. CJ & I decided to be up there in the morning  starting  a little below the does in the timber and rocks at first light with a lite snow falling  we started glassing and at 7 a big deer stepped  out  and all I seen tall dark  Horn's  I didn't count I just said CJ there's my buck  CJ never seen the buck until it dropped. Since CJ started hunting I have only just been there with him not hunting  for the most part and have been there for his 7 deer and 1 elk along with Justin's first deer and cow  youth moose so they have never seen Dad take an animal. So after the hug’s and high 5’s we started  the hundred yard walk to my buck and as we got closer it kept getting bigger and when finally there it is the biggest deer either of us have ever seen body and Horn's the  neck was huge the taxidermist measured the neck across the hide at 26“. It's going to the butcher in the morning but I'm sure it was close to 300 lb’s live. So now what do you all think for a score and width  we got on B&C last night to figure out how to score it best we could. In the end it is better than anything I expected and was a great hunt. Mark

That's one kickass buck, congratulations!  Love the pic from a distance with the two of you...that really helps put the size of that pig in perspective.  Harder to tell true size up close, but at 20 yards that thing is one big deer.  Well done!

A few more from the hunt. After we were done the boy's and I went to cut some firewood and CJ says watch we'll see a buck right next to the road well sure enough the buck here was 25 yds off the road with a doe stopped looked at him went and cut some wood and on the way down he was still there 45 min. later on public land and either there are 4 really big Yotes up on sweetgrass or you know what are there 30 miles from twisp

Great buck, looks like an awesome hunt. I love that area. I am guessing about 27" wide or so and 170 to 175.

Brought the deer into the butcher today ready to cut it weighted 170lbs which he said was big considering the deer had no fat on it anywhere even down the back at the hinds was meat no fat on top. wamuledeer you were right on it's just under 27" wide and we came up with 163" might be a little bigger I think. We went on the short side if we were unsure of where to measure from. When we first put the tape on him I thought he was around 25" at best but I think because his neck and head is so big the horns looked smaller. Again thanks to everyone! I took my 2 boys to Wyoming in Oct. on a deer and antelope combo hunt that was there Christmas present last year I didn't hunt but they both shot really nice deer and goats there story will be on in a couple days. Well done Mark, way to stick with it. That buck is a hog all the way around. The butcher is going to love that deer, it's going to be more like the cattle he is used to. :chuckle:

Thanks for all the pics too, those were great.

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.
