667 late season muzzleloader
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:16:47 AM »
I noticed that 667 was open this year for late muzzle and I have a friend who has never taken a deer who lives out by Elk Plain we were thinking of doing some day hunts into the unit.Neither of us have ever been there and would like some help. This is the Vail tree farm right? Is there a main gate you have to go through if so where is it?What is the main access points?Once in the area are there closed roads to hike behind? As you can see im totally in need of some help!Any info would be appr.
Thanks in advance Kram

They plan on opening the main gate for the thanksgiving weekend which is rare.  They were going to last year for archery but idiots screwed that up.   Should be a good muzzleloader deer hunt with far far fewer people than rifle.

-Up high in the snow around thanksgiving is awesome, they dont open the gates after late buck too often but when they do, the archery or muzzle if its open will have the best blacktail hunt they ever had, The Big Bucks will still be hard to get though!

-Im sure vail will be the only way in if its open thanksgiving. A few years back we went up late archery deer and it was insane, seriosly deer around almost every corner! Just road hunt spot and stalk, some of the steep canyons off the 42 is were id go! Make sure you have a cat tag too cause your going too see them up there!

Best maps are aerial photos.  Use google earth or Go here.  Zoom to a close scale and print.  Cut and tape them together.

It isway to easy to get liost on the Wh. map.

I checked out this post because I am interested in maybe checking it out (667) for late archery (overlap), and am impressed by the response.
The "usual" guys must be hunting..........
one of the few times a question like this was answered with encouragement, and a comment that was an obvious joke about poaching was not taken seriously and therefore not changing this post into a name calling pissing match.
I commend you and look forward to more posts in a similar vein, those who responded are the kind of sportsmen I look forward to sharing the woods with.

ANYHOW, after I got that off my chest, I want to ask,
#1, Is the gate open only the weekend after Thanksgiving?
#2, What is the phone # to find out?
#3, What about the 1000 mainline up in the Bald Hills, is that gate open?
#4, Anybody see any Elk?

Bad news guys.  Just called the hotline and the Thanksgiving gate opening has been cancelled.  No info other than that.  Call 1-866-636-6531 to hear it for yourself.   667 will still be open just no drive in Vail access.  Still lots of good walk in for muzzleloader and bow though.
