Almota General Season buck
« on: November 17, 2009, 03:18:52 PM »
So I got a little lazy/busy after getting home from this years hunt, more busy than lazy! So we went over on Friday morning to get to the property we hunt outside of Colfax, had camp set up by about noon. Relaxed the rest of the day.

Saturday started out slow for me, got to my spot about 30 minutes before shooting time, wind was going the wrong direction up top so I had to watch the backside of the draw I really wanted to watch. I saw 4 does first thing moving in and out of the brush. I had a B tag so I could take a doe if I was presented with a nice shot. About 10 minutes into shooting time I heard a shot from right above our camp and then about 5 minutes later my godfather got on the radio saying he shot a buck on his way up the trail. It was a 3x3 or 3x4 I can't remember. He would call us back when he got it down to camp so we could help hang and skin. I decided to move sidehill with the wind to use my own scent to see if I could bust anything out of some thick patches, ended up busting a couple does but nothing worth shooting. The rest of Saturday was fairly uneventful, saw plenty of deer just no solid shot opportunities. No legal bucks closer than 1,000 yards. haha.

Mark's deer

Sunday was a wild day. First thing in the morning my cousin shot a small 3x3, as he only could be there opening weekend. It will be a good eater for sure.

While people were getting Adams deer off the hill to take back to the barn to hang and bag I continued hunting. Walking down an old road the landowners used when they logged the hillside many years ago. its just a glorified trail really but allows an easy walk across the entire wooded hillside. As I was coming around a corner into a thick wide draw I saw movement in the brush straight across from me, then out of the corner of my eye saw a doe staring at me from about 10 feet, knew I was busted. Once she busted the bushes exploded with 10+deer crashing all around me. I watched as about half went over one side of the draw into the next one over and the other half went off to my left. I decided to move up a little ways and slowly work my way back to the left to see if I could catch them moving in the brush some more and if I could catch them in an opening I knew was behind me. I saw them moving but could never get a shot, then while standing and watching I saw movement at the edge of the brush and field (above me) and saw antlers. I knew it was a legal buck but could not get a shot due to the amount of brush. I decided to let them settle down in that area and head back to camp so we could get a plan together. We decided we would put my dad on the ridge to the right of that draw, my godfather in the very bottom of the draw on the road, and I would go up to the edge of the field and walk back to see if anything would kick out. On the way down the road we jumped a buck, definitely legal, no shot, but he ran right into that thick draw. During that hunt I didnt kick anything up, so I met up with my dad to see what we wanted to do next. Mark decided he was going to push straight through the thickest part of that draw to really try and get them moving. He also had a B Tag. Well he started in and the deer started moving right away. Saw a legal buck but no shot, i moved to the fence line while my dad stayed lower. I Could hear them crashing through the brush coming right to me, Mark had got on the radio and said there were 4 legals running together. So as I'm waiting i get all set up and sure enough a big buck jumped out of the brush into an opening right in front of me, identified legal, he turned and started to run when i put a shot right in his neck. He didnt go down right away, i was a little low of the spine but i knew he was hit hard. I took another shot before he went over the hill and hit him in the back leg breaking it at the knee. My dad came up to meet me and we started off to find him, he was just over the hill down in the bottom of the next draw laying right along the brush and field line. I put one more kill shot in him behind the head instead of waiting for him to bleed out and that was that. When we finally got to check him out we learned he was way bigger than i thought. he is a solid 6x6. shorter tines but still awesome. by far my biggest deer to date. only 2nd buck ever taken. I shot about 5pm. got him back to camp just after dark.

the picture doesnt do him justice. i will get more taken when he is mounted.
