West Side Late Buck
« on: November 19, 2009, 03:07:36 AM »
For those of us who are who love the late buck hunt.... Good luck this morning and for the season.  I don't know about everyone else but I have been laying in bed since 11:30 and I slept maybe a half an hour.  I swear every year at this time I am 7 and it's Christmas morning.  With the lack of sleep my face may look like this  :yike: at daylight.  Good luck all and be safe.

No, dont wait till saturday, this is great weather, the deer are going to be laying down till you get a break in the weather , then its movement time.
Get back out here, wait out the weather, look for them getting up and shaking off or moving from 1 small timber patch to another.
Every blacktail i have taken in weather like this was in midday, either after the weather lets up or breaks or the deer just cant stay bedded any longer..
Years ago when i hunted modern for blacktails this is the weather i hoped for.

If you can read this, you should log off and get back out there!

Still-hunt the heavy bedding cover.  In this weather they will hold tight and likely not run too far if bumped.

If you can read this, then you may have already got your deer this morning :IBCOOL:
I left the truck with my cousin who is my hunting partner at about 7am.  at 8:15 I was gutting him out.  I woas out on whidbey so horns didn't matter. I saw a deer and it went down.  The horns were a bonus :)

Get out there.  The bucks are moving and are still rutty.  Use a grunt tube and rattle some horns.  They will still come a runnin.
Have fun and stay safe.

Well...we went out and I must same we were lame road hunters this AM. But, we had a late start. We were up in about 3" of snow and saw NO tracks. It seems like they are pretty low here, anyways. Headed home to put up the rifle and grab the shot gun. We of course saw a NICE 3x3 with eye guards on our way home but, crossed from the woods into someones back yard. !! Headed back out after we choke down some lunch.
Good luck to everyone else:) :) And myself..lol

Just got home!! Didn't see anything this evening. Hiked up an old gated road...found a spot by a couple rubs..hubby bleated and grunted. Nothing. We waited awhile and nothing moved and we didn't hear anything. We hiked out. As we were leaving in our car from the gate...down the road towards us were 2 creepy looking guys and they were heading into where we were. It was dark by then. They had some sticks and an old small dog they were carrying. No cars anywhere near the road or on the way down the mountain..WTH?????? :o

Easy on the doe pee!!  A couple drops is all you need.  Too much scent is alarming to deer  :yike:

I got SO wet today  :chuckle: I still hunted and walked up on several does and one spike.  I left the car at 715 am and got back at 1:30.  I heard some gun shots early.  Walking through the ferns my pants finally failed soaked my long johns then my long johns soaked my socks. GAME OVER.  I was wet so I couldn't stop moving and worst of all my feet were wet.  My boots didn't fail.  I was just soaked.  The deer I did see were all inside of 50 yards!  a couple @ 10 yards.  I was going to stay out all day but, I didn't feel like getting sick!  I guess I found a little fresh Elk sign too so I will be using that to my advantage next week for the late archery season!

It's a close-range deal on nasty days - nice job - you got into some action.  Any one of those deer could have been a pig!  The clock is ticking...get a plan set for morning.

I also got soaked through.  Only bucks I saw were on the drive up.  Didn't hear a single shot all morning, so guess I'm not the only one got skunked.  Back at it tomorrow.  Thinking of wearing my duck hunting pants.

19 deer today.  Thank God for Helly Hansen Impertech, stayed bone dry except for the end of my sleeves.  I don't know what the heck is going on though.  The first eighteen deer I saw were does and fawns without a buck in site.  I don't know how many times I was ready to click off the safety but there was never a buck following.  The 19th deer was a very nice buck (120+), all by himself.  I spotted him at 200 yards bedded down and hidden.  All I could see was his head and had to move to the right so that his vitals were exposed he caught my movement as I was moving.  He stood up and about 2 seconds later bounded over the ridge.  Fun day just bummed I couldn't close the deal.

We saw 7 deer today. All does except one decent 2 point buck that was standing in a side road as we went by. He bailed off into the reprod and we searched but never saw him again. We spent a lot of time driving and glassing clearcuts. I hunted through a patch of timber about 1/4 mile down and then back up the other side along the edge of a clearcut. Nothing. Had seen a nice 3 point buck with a doe in that clearcut last Saturday at 2 pm. Trying again tomorrow. Might do a little rattling.

It looks like I might be guiding 3 women (my wife is not included) on a last ditch deer hunt while their hubbys are hunting in Montana.  I hope to surprise their old men with deer hanging in their barns when they get home on Sunday evening.

Had a beautiful day of hunting in Pacific Co. First it rained and then it rained somemore. I think we saw the ark headed down the willapa river with all the bucks on board. Seen six does all day and that was it. Trying to dry out for tommorrows hunt. Good luck to all you hunters on Friday.

Saw 16 today, 13 does, 3 bucks.  One 3x3, and 2 spikes.  Couldn't close the deal on the 3X3.  Tomorrow maybe.  Oh, and the rut is on!  Course my rattling and calling didn't work at all today.  I think the wind covered up all the noise.  And all deer were seen within 100 yards.

Got soaked yet again today on my 8-mile ineffective walkabout.  Didn't see any deer, at all.  Saw lots of guys driving back and forth in their trucks.  Oh well, this year is going to end with a "squish" for me I guess.  At least my feet stayed dry (thank you, Danner).  I'm moving waterproof gloves to the very top of my Christmas list.  Congrats to all of you who were successful, and to anyone else that had fun!

After 16 years of hunting on the eastside i have decided to go after a Blacktail for the late bow season, only problem is i really have no idea were to go and picking to do this late in the game is adding some pressure.
I did go scouting up by Northbend where  i used to hunt them but who would of thought that trees grow that fast, every clear cut i knew of is now forest  :chuckle:.
So im looking for some pointers if anyone has any for areas in the north sound, snohomish, skagit, island counties??

I hunted Stormking this AM.  Up high I was in about 5-6 inches of snow.  Cut a couple of tracks but didnt see any deer.  Gonna try again in the AM.

Crud! As we were calling it a night, a Huge body..at least 3 point came out in fromt of us. He was limping..of course we were headed out so, I was not prepared.. :bash: I hopped out and he was already too deep in the woods for me to see him. We hiked at least 6-8miles today and saw 1 doe. Then we took a road hunting trip and get that?? Go figure!!

Rattled one in for my oldest son.
Caught it watching us from behind a jack fir. Couldn't tell if it had horns :bash:
Back at it tomorrow. :)

4 does today in the Stormking, 15 deer yesterday in another area and one nice 3x3 that I couldn't seal the deal on, he busted me before I saw him and only had a posible texas heart shot and the he was into thick brush and didn't see him again, I tried to track him hoping that he would run a bit and stop and look back but no look, in hind sight I guess I should have ran after him, maybe I would have gotten a shot, oh well it was a fun year, 1 bear and 1 6x6 bull, I can't complain, good luck to everyone tomorrow, I'm home with the twin babies tomorow so it's over for me.

Got mine at 8:00 AM this morning in the Minot Peak unit. Shot him within fifteen yards with my 870 12 gauge.   :)

hunted the Vail Zoo today, all day until dusk and end of shooting hours. The wind was howling all day and got worse toward dusk.

14 does, 2 fawns, passed on 2 separate spikes but no big bucks following 9 single does. Hunted 3 different areas within Vail.
Watched and waited avg 20 minutes or more on each of the does, waiting for a bruiser buck but they weren't chasin today. 2x I waited-watched the trail from a single doe passerby for over an hour.

back at it in the rain on Sunday. Other than the gusty, chilly wind, the rain (mostly) snow wasn't that bad.
