OK all you Elkaholics! Here's a small quiz for you in light of rutting talk on various threads! I will make it multiple choice to make it a hair easier! (grin) Perhaps some of us will learn a tid bit here, it can come in useful during ones elk hunts too!
We are looking for the AVERAGE here not splitting hairs!
#-1--Once a cow is ready to be bred how long is she in Estrus?
A--6-9 hours
B--12-15 hours
C--18-24 hours
#-2--What is the Average times a single cow is bred during this time of Estrus she's in?
A--1-3 times
B--6-9 times
C--12-15 times
#-3--Whether a cow is bred or not, what's the time period that passes before she enters her Estrus cycle once again?
A--14 days
B--21 days
C--28 days
Now I know some will be guessing, but see how many you actually know 1st! I hope it gets us thinking a bit, it's fun to see what we know & what we don't know! It's all in fun now! Thanks!

Its less than 24 hours......she'll probably breed around 1-3 times and if missed will start again in 20 days or in this case 21 on your chart.

The one I am most unsure of is attempts. I was enlightened this fall and ended up seeing them do it much more than I ever thought they would, sheep and deer as well. I have read where they do up to 12 attempts so

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Huntbear, you sound like me when I was in school, course that was 40 years ago! I still liked multiple choice then too! (grin)
OK guys, here's the real answers! B-C-B in that order! No one was 100% correct but I probably wouldn't be either if I didn't already know the answers! (grin) A bit of research helps out! (grin) The one that surprised me most was the average times a cow will be covered/mounted in the 12-15 hour period of estrus! And it can be done by more than 1 bull. Just another factor how we can come upon screaming bulls for a day or two & then nothing the next day as if a light switch was turned off! It was! (grin) A lot depends on cows coming into estrus or being in estrus!

B,A,B
Again, looking to answer best to "average". First question is a bit tricky because of the wording. It states once she is ready to be bred so I call that once she starts "standing". B may be a bit long, but yes, final answer.
Second question has a lot to do with Bull/Cow ratios but I'll stick to my answer of "a". When several are in heat at the same time, it is common for a bull to breed one many times and others only once or twice. But, I'm basing most of what I know from bovines not necessarily ungulates.
