Yes Virginia...I do hunt. (picture HEAVY)
« on: January 07, 2008, 06:09:00 PM »
I know I shouldn't let this type of stuff get to me, but it does.
When I found this site on another forum I thought, Cool, local guy's of like minds!
Then I was even more surprised when I logged on and saw the Photography was the 2nd thread in the list of things to talk about on the site. So in my excitement I through up a picture I took while headed over for late season archery as my way to say HI and introduce myself.

I don't have alot of time to get online being a stay at home dad with a Disabled step daughter and my 5 yr old son with Leukemia and that where into the 3yrd year of treatment, and now he has walking pneumonia and strep on his bottom that is worse pain then anything I thing I could handle.

Yes I have time this moment to post as I sit here in his hospital room and he sleeps.

I tried to answer what I could when I could, but I guess I didn't do anything to validate my hunting prowess.

The other reasons I have not posted more "hunting" Pictures is....

1. When I am hunting I have about 20 total days a year to hunt early season and late combined, so when I'm hunting, I'm hunting.
Not shooting pics of animals I am after.

2. If I do shoot pics during hunting season, it's usually around camp or something I see while going in or coming out.

3. My animals are nothing to look at as I don't and never have hunted for horn. I am a meat hunter and hunt for Elk in a Spike or Cow unit only. Plus I have to do self portraits as I am usually alone tell I am done gutting and skinning, then get help if I can.

4. All but this season have been shot on film or a small digital point and shoot. So I have still to send in about 2000 slides out of my collection of 80,000 images to get scanned and processed to a degree that will justify having it done for great prints in the future.

5. What I do have are on removable hard drives and not something I keep on my laptops small 50g hard drive so I have to go find them.

Another point I would like to make is I am in no way what I would call a Professional.
In the 25 years that I have been shooting first film then digital I think I have made a total of $500.00.
If I am a professional, them I am in the wrong profession.

I just got the smugmug account for my video clients to show them pics I would take on the side with my Point and shoot and now my Nikon D200 which by the way I just bought in August of this last year.
Plus my family said I should TRY to sell some and get some return on investment.
It's just a photo hosting site like all the others, I just made it look good. Hell, you can click "buy this picture" on most all of them.
Since I got the Smugmug account I have sold a grand total of $16.00 worth of pictures to some lady's I took pictures of at a motorcycle track day my wife was doing.
I'm raking it in aren't I?

I hope to Discuss more on photography and Hunting here in the future.

Last night after the family was asleep, 11pm-2am, I worked on finding what I could from hunting, fishing and scouting pics then re-sized them all to 800x600. Some of the might look like crap because I scanned them into my computer back in the late 90's with a crappy slide scanner.

OH, and why I chose the Rainier picture I did, Rules- The photo must pertain to hunting or fishing or the outdoors in some fashion.

So In no particulary order, Enjoy.

I appreciate your talent and didn't mean anything by it other than I was being a smart :ass:  ;) Sorry.

While you take professional quality photos, I don't think you qualify as a professional in any sense of the imagination.  I read in a photo magazine one time that they say you must make somewhere between 25-50% of your income at least to be considered such...  There were other factors, but the point is clear.

This isn't what your post is about, but I do feel if someone asks me to vote for the best photo or photo of the year, yours has to win hands down.  I have had a hard time with the photo of the month for a few months now because I don't know what they are looking for so I haven't entered it in a while.  I really enjoyed when we had the month where it was hunting/fishing success photos.  That gave me direction and it was easy to vote because of that.  I would suggest to the powers that be more monthly themes...sunset month, water shots month, bird hunting shots, mammal month, fishing month, etc.  Or, if we are a hunting site only then hunting shots only.

I understand the meat hunting thing.  I shot the first legal elk I saw this year.  It happened to be a 3 point bull, but if it was a 200 lb calf...I'd have been eating calf meat tonight.  I got out of trophy hunting for a long long time and have shot more does than bucks I think if I add them all up...  Anywho, I enjoy the pictures you take and advise you help give.  And even if you are a Nikon guy, I hope you stick around here as much as possible.  I have yet to win a photo of the month, so consider yourself a step ahead of me...lol.

Honestly, I personnaly didn't enter to win, I get more pleasure out of someone saying "Nice picture" then anything else.

I LOVE shooting with a camera more then anything I do, But I do make a living as a videographer, and that's a whole different ball of wax.  ;)

It almosts scares me, but I think you and I may be brothers somehow Elkman...

I bowhunt, you bowhunt
I hunt elk, you hunt elk
I shoot does, you shoot does
I shoot cows, you shoot cows
I hunt pheasant, you hunt pheasant
I take pictures, you take pictures
I work in the Rose Bowl, you work in the Rose Bowl
You hunt out of a camper, I hunt out of a camper
You pack out elk meat on your back, I pack out elk meat on my back.
You've been to Whistlin Jacks, I love Whistlin Jacks
You fish for chinook, I fish for chinook
You scuba dive, I scuba dive
you spearfish, I spearfish
You shoot lingcod, I love shooting big lingcod
you wear a drysuit, I wear a drysuit
you sit around camp and drink a few beers, I sit around with buddies and drink beer

There are two differences I see between you and I based on your pictures...I hate soccer and Nikon... :)  Oh, and I never had a mullet...

Now, if you have a hot Bellevue wife, one child, and enjoy woodworking like I do, this is really going to get scary...

Just curious if you could tell us what settings you might use to shoot static scenery (ISO # or picture size 2560x1920  1600x1200  640x480  or quality, standard fine economy etc...)

My camera will do bracketing but there are so many settings and dials and buttons that unless I spend tons of hours troubleshooting which you likely have I am lost. I have read the little booklet that was sent with my camera but there is so little information in there I am still guessing.

With all your experience, could you tell what I may be doing wrong just by looking at some photos ??

I don't want to become an expert over night I would just like to be proud to show my pics instead of deleting them cause they suck if you know what I mean.

Well Shawn, that is pretty scary.
My wife is hot but from Kitsap, don't like soccer either, that's M-ray's shot, Love wood working, have some good tools, but not enough time. I do have one son by me and my wife, just married into 2 more daughters. As for the Nikon/Canon debate, I like both, just ended up with Nikon. Started with an Olympus when In high school, think I went to Nikon because I could afford them after my Olympus was stolen. Then when I was ready to go digital stayed with Nikon as I had 3k in Nikon Glass.
Wonder how many megs and cost the D3x will be? and when. ;)

My Honey  ;)

Not to hijack Elkman's thread, but I guess I'll give a go at this one.  ISO and picture size...you always use the lowest ISO and highest picture size and shoot raw for static landscape shots.  Why?  Lowest ISO has lowest noise, highest picture size lets you blow it up huge, and RAW gives you a lot of latitude when correcting after the shot.

Bracketing is important to know for HDR, but not for regular shooting.  You need to know only a couple things.  When I shoot, 99% of the time I shoot in apature priority (Av).  If I'm shooting wildlife, I shoot the lowest apature possible for my lens.  If I'm shooting landscape, I use a tripod, use F16-F22, and who cares what your shutter speed is because you are using a tripod.  For wildlife, if your speed isn't enough, you just up your ISO.  For most deer/wildlife, I use 1/250th of a second.  So set for your lowest apature, 1/250th of a second, and the lowest ISO you can use with the available light.

You don't need to know anything else.  You don't need the fancy options or anything.  99% of the time I do the above.  Most professional photographers I know do the above.  Post some pics you are having trouble with to see if we can spot the problem.

Well robo just a quick note on that.
Im sure shawn can chime in to as it takes me to long to type.

Rules for me.

1. I ALWAYS shoot with the lowest ISO I can get away with. usually 100.

2. I AWAYS shoot the highest/finest quality settings I can, whether with my Point and Shoot or my DSLR.
If you need to for space on a card, get more or larger cards. My thinking is, I am not going to shoot smaller or less quality and then nail some sweet shot and be restricted to print or control size do to shooting it in the lesser mode. Make sense?

So say I roll up on a nice landscape, 1. ISO 100 2. set aperture to 2 or 3 stops down from widest setting available on the lens I am using, OR widest depending on the lens if it's a slow lens, like starts at 5.6 and light in said situation. then dial shutter for correct exposure. I will also bracket the shutter a stop up and a stop down for 2or 3 stops both ways just to cover my butt. In other words, with the shutter set and showing the correct exposure I will shoot it the dial the shutter a stop slower to over expose 1 stop and then another stop for 2 over, then go the other way to under expose just because I can.

There are some great books and site's, I will post up later. Gotta tend to the boy for a bit.

Ok Shawn don't cringe to hard but here are a couple I took just to try out the HDR program (photomatix pro) you folks talk about.

Sorry if this is taking away from the owners thread but I really appreciate the tips !!!

We have officially hijacked Elkman's thread...sorry man.

All the photos on this page are overexposed.  I see you bracketed three photos, but all three are overexposed.  You are ideally supposed to have one that is right on, one overexposed, and one underexposed.

The other problem I see if you have a white balance problem.  See how everything is ice blue color?  I suggest either setting your white balance to auto or try and set it to match the conditions.  While my camera has auto, it also has cloudy, sunny, rainy, etc.  Just match it to your situation.  You have a serious white balance problem though, something is messed up there.

Excellent photo's Elkman.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

Yup, kind of hard to fix white balance with a .jpg
But I dinked with it any way, just wasting time.

Adjusted the curves on each then a little HDR to cap it off. Still would be alot better with the correct W/balance.

Awsome pics Elkman, thats one hell of a day of lingcod fishing!!!!

I stand corrected and owe you an apology. I was quick to judge and without getting to know you first made inappropriate comments. I hope there wasn't any unrepairable damage caused by this and can assure you it wont happen again. I still think you're fishing in a trout pond :chuckle: but please keep posting the pics and giving out the advice, you and Pope are definitely people we all can learn immensely from.

Na, I worked for NFL Properties for 4 years as the project manager for the NFL Experience and out of all the city's teams I went to during thier Buy weeks, Detroit was the funnest best bunch of guy's.
When the took me to the airport they said " damn, we forgot to give you some shirts, will fed-x em to ya"
I was like ya, whatever. 2 day's later they sent me a box of 6!
The next time I went back they introduced me to Mr. Sanders and he Gave me a signed Ball! sweet bunch of guy's.

By the way, I have lived in more then 30 location in this state, born and raised here, but did do a stint in L.A., '93-'99 for work reasons :'(.

I just came home every season for hunting  ;)

Sorry Elkman & Shawn, I wasn't tying to confuse the original post rather trying to make fun of the mullets back then!
I happened to play professional soccer back in the 80's & 90's and it was the only picture I could find with my mullet  :chuckle: I didn't have a reason to take any pics of myself then seeing how everybody else did!
