I really like the Tall Timber 2 but I am not exactly the best caller. I believe that skill trumps quality of call to some degree.

The single most important thing I seek out is one that says it works when it's wet.

All depends on how much you want to spend.  I'm not great at calling but know the basics.  When I started learning I picked up a sureshot call out of cabelas for like $12, worked well and called in many ducks off it.

I have never used an expensive call but some of my friends do. They use the Zinc calls and i still use my Original Wench. It is an awesome call that has two tones which lets you sound like different ducks at different ranges. Also works good when wet and is about 15 dollars. Dont shop at sportsmans for them they are like 35 but any primos dealer will have em. Good luck and happy hunting...Justin

the main question is how much do you want to spend?  Rnt has great calls I have the mvp and love it.  I also have an Echo xlt and love it as well there are many good calls out there it really just comes down to trying some and seeing what fits you best.  It is all about what works best for you.

Well if you want a good all around inexpensive call that will really work then get a haydel. BUT if you can afford it and want to spend a little bit more money, Buy an echo acrylic. these are top notch calls and by far surpass any call i have ever used or have. One word to explain them............QUALITY

After coming to grips that my tongue is not fast enough to do the mallard feeding call  :'( i picked up the primos feedin shaker call-and it has worked very good for me-i thought it sounded a litte funny but ive turned several ducks with it this year into our spread-but needs to be used with a standard duck call as well.

For starters you can't go wrong with the DR-85 both my boys started with them.

my vote for starters would be either the DR-85 or the original wench.
in my opinion, it's best to get real good with one and stick to it.
