Invisible Fence
« on: November 23, 2009, 07:24:32 PM »
I want to put in an underground fence in the back yard.  Anyone have any luck with any of the store bought systems?  Thanks

cause after 3 years at this house, mossy started jumping the fence(well kinda climbs over it).  Can't afford to put in a higher fence right now so I'm trying to explore my options.

my dog started jumping the fence.... it is by far one of the hardest habits to break....  I put in a hot wire on top of the fence.... I think it cost a couple hundred bucks in the long run....  It only took orion once to learn that he no longer could jump the fence....  i suggest running a hot wire instead of digging up the yard...  alot of the lower dollar invisible fences don't carry to zap power to deter my dogs...  Orion figured out where the boundary was on the invisible fence by walking up to it until the audible tone came on on the collar... then he backed up and took off hauling ass.... he got zapped once and was out of the yard... they don't zap after he got outside the boundary

I share our fence with neighbors on both sides, will the hot wire on top be a problem since it's a chain link?(not zapping the neighbor's dog)?

I got a invisible fence and it works pretty good unless you don't spend time to establish the boundary with your dog.  If the dog don't know where it is they will cross it and get used to just gritting thier teeth to get past it.  I had to get a higher correction level collar for my lab it says it's for "harder to train" dogs.  with the fence you won't most likely have the crossing it problem and it will prolly work fine.

as long as the neighbor dog doesn't jump the fence they'll be fine...my fence is chain link as well... it has plastic  pieces that hold the wire up off the  chain link so the only thing that is hot is the hot wire....  the small 1 joule fence controllers do the trick...  this is the one i have

there are cheaper ones out there that will do the trick...  mine just plugs into a wall outlet... but if that's not readily available they have solar ones.... but they are spendy

We use one for our 3 dogs it works great their can be a cat on the otherside and all they will do is bark. And our dogs a catahoulas with a very strong prey drive. But the fence makes them stay put.

The one we use is called petsafe. You take a edging shovel basically just make a slit in the ground put the wire in it took about 2hr for a 1/4 acre.

We just had a invisible fence put in and it works great, we had it put in so the rottweilers wouldnt jump on the fence. The FEDX and UPS delivery guys can attest they noticed right away.

I have a GWP that climbs fences.  I called Petsafe and they said I could run the wire along the top of the fence.  It works great and if I make a bad toss when working on retrieving he doesn't get zapped.  I have the tough dog unit.

I put in a PetSafe last spring, put the wire in a plastic drip line to protect it, buried it 4" deep along the county road. It works great, my bulldog will stand in the warning zone but won't cross for any reason. The cats he chases soon learned where the safe zone is, it's funny to watch them tease him.  I think the training the dog gets on the boundary will make the difference in how good it works.  I put a regular walk through gate between a couple buildings, always taking the shock collar off when I take him out, he quickly learned that's the only place he can go out.

okay so it sounds like a have a couple choices.  I'm thinking that the normal electric fence will be cheaper but it's not as pleasing to the eye as the invisible fence.  A couple of guys at work said the buried ones haven't worked for them.  But maybe they didn't train them right as mentioned above.  I'm wanting to do this tomorrow so I guess I need to make a decision pretty quick.  Another downside to the one on the fence is an old lady next door likes to pet him over the fence but on the plus side it might keep some of the squirrels out of the garden. :dunno:
