Not yet.  I'll buy my license down there OTC next week when I go for archery coues.

What units did you guys put down?  Did you go for the bigguns (9, 10) or something easier to draw?  Just curious.  I'll probably try to win the lottery with Unit 9 as my first choice, but then put down another unit as a more realistic 2nd choice.  I know more about other units (1, 2, 3 and 8), so one or two of those will be my other choices.

First choice unit 10 early rifle.  Second choice unit 1, 2b, 2c. (I think those are right) early muzzleloader.  Just want to hunt unit 1.
Also bought my antelope point.

Stamp if I draw you better go.

I'm thinking it over seriously.  I can't decide.  I don't ahve many points and wonder if I should get out while I can, or just work another shift and go for it.  I can't remember how Arizona works, if its basically a one shot deal meaning first choice is the only one that really matters like Idaho, or if its like NM where they go down the list and pick choice #3.  and...do you lose points.  I also thought about 3 over 9 and 10.  I don't know...may just skip it this year.  The thought of fronting that much cash just for nothing and then losing the $150. bah humbug.

Your first two choice are looked at before they go to the next guy.  I say apply.  You also loose your points if you draw.

2007 Bonus Point Breakdown for top non res AZ units
14 0 0 N/A 0 N/A
13 1 1 100% 0 N/A
12 0 0 N/A 0 N/A
11 2 0 N/A 0 0.95%
10 1 0 N/A 0 0.87%
9 8 0 N/A 0 0.79%
8 8 0 N/A 0 0.71%
7 10 0 N/A 0 0.64%
6 7 0 N/A 0 0.56%
5 18 0 N/A 0 0.48%
4 21 0 N/A 0 0.4%
3 52 0 N/A 1 0.32%
2 65 0 N/A 0 0.24%
1 96 0 N/A 0 0.16%
0 135 0 N/A 0 0.08%

Here is how the Points likely breakdown on the top AZ Units.  As you can see your odds don't ever improve enough to matter until you are in the max pool.  After 11 years your still less than 1% in units 9/10. and probably more units like 1/2/3.

Since AZ does not square points there is not much advantage to having a bunch of points unless you are max. So I say apply.

Ive considered it, but never have looked at the cost. Ive always heard it was spendy, but how much is "spendy"?? Not looking for exact numbers, just a ball park would be great.
Thanks,

151.25 for the license and about 595 for the tag.  Roughly 750 and you'll get about 585 back.

Thanks for the info!! Thats actually a fair price for an out of state elk tag compared to other states.

The tough part is paying the non-refundable $151 license fee for a longshot draw.

The odds of drawing down there aren't good, but they're doable, particularly if you don't apply for the super popular units.   Some of the units are essentially impossible.  For example, Unit 9 archery...75 total tags, of which NR's will only get 7 due to the 10% cap.  As the unit with the highest demand, my guess is that all 7 of those will go to guys with max points.  In other words, you're wasting your time starting to apply for Unit 9 archery at this point.

But other units are much less popular with NRs, so the cap really doesn't play a role.  I don't know anything about Unit 7 West (and I didn't see anybody listing it for their apps), but kill success has been about 40% and it borders 9 and 10.  Draw odds are WAY better than 9 and 10, and I'm guessing the NR demand is much lower, so you very well might not run into a NR cap issue.  All of those units have 375" bulls, just 9 might have a higher concentration of them and more 400".

I've been in so I need to keep going. I have 6 deer points and screwed up because I didn't apply one year and our apps. got thrown out once for one of us not signing. I burned my elk points in unit 8 a few years ago. You can do the hunter Ed. now on line to get the permanent point. You just have to do a one day class down there. If anyone draws 8 I'll tell you what I know.

If you just put in for points you don't have to pony up the 595 for the elk tag. It's still a little spendy though. I'm going to buy the point so it will cost me 151.25 for the license and 7.50 for the point. Then in June it's 7.50 for a deer point if that's all you want. I guess someone with 2 points drew the early rifle Unit 9 and killed a 390 bull, so there is hope.

Residents and nonresidents who have max points go into the pool together for 20% of the tags.  Residents can draw all 20% and nonresidents can draw a max of 10% as long as they do not reach there 10% cap for a given unit.  Residents have max points at 19.  Saw on here were max for nonresidents was 13.  You really do not have to have max points for elk to draw as a nonresident.  But for deer it is different, you do need max points to draw the late season tags in most of the units north of the colorado river.

Again I say apply!

So for deer if a guy is 2 or 3 points from the max. is it hopeless? Are there other Arizona options that aren't the premier units during the rut? I'd like to go down there some day for a chance at a good buck, but it looks like it won't be on the strip :'( I guess I have some homework to do.

If you do not have max points your best bet is the early hunts on the kaibab.  The west is usually considered the best unit.  But the east gives out fewer tags and has fewer roads.  Which I perfer.

Bone, how many points do you have thus far?  Odds aren't too bad as long as you're not holding out for Unit 9.  Are you close to getting the 5-year loyalty point?

I think I am at 4.  Definately at the low end of things.  I might just do unit9 this year and hope for a random chance in hell, and not really expect to go there this year, and just get the point, then the loyalty point.  I KNOW I am hunting Montana this year, as I am going in with 4 points, which is practically unheard of.  I thinkI'll mutiny if I don't pull there.  Hornseeker has his work cut out for him this year at least in pointing me in the right direction.
