Do I need a plug in my shotgun for small game?
« on: November 24, 2009, 06:39:49 PM »
Curious.  It appears that I need a plug in my Rem 870 for "game birds" but not for rabbit.

Does anyone know for certain if that is correct?

Just for birds including Turkey as far as I know.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something. You choose.

No.
http://www.fws.gov/le/pdffiles/50_CFR_20.pdf

§ 20.21 What hunting methods are illegal?
Migratory birds on which open seasons are prescribed in this part may be taken by any method except those prohibited in this section. No persons shall take migratory game birds:
(a) With a trap, snare, net, rifle, pistol, swivel gun, shotgun larger than 10 gauge, punt gun, battery gun, machinegun, fish hook, poison, drug, explosive, or stupefying substance;
(b) With a shotgun of any description capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler, incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so its total capacity does not exceed three shells;

Washington state law prohibits the hunting of any game bird with a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells.

No you dont need a plug for small game but you do need to follow the "no lead" rule if the area has one.

Get a SxS or O/U then there is no worries.. :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Thanks.  The area I will be in, Shillapoo, does have a no lead restriction.  I'm off to Sportsman's Warehouse today to pick up some shells.

Thanks for all your responses.

Yeah, Wholesale Sports.

I settled on a 3" load of #4 (Remington HD).

Would have preferred 2-3/4" and  #6 but after looking at two BiMarts, Walmart and Big 5, this was the best I could do without settling on steel.

Does this appply to grouse?

if I am hunting deer/elk with the Mossberg 500 and plan to take some grouse if I see them, would I need to plug the Mossberg to restrict it to one in the chamber and two in the tube?
