The sitution was just not working out to my advantage so I had to take the shot longer than what I would have liked...45yards :chuckle: twice as long as most of my shots.  Weapon shot a 420 grain easton axis, it was a one shot kill :chuckle:

A 500 plus yard shot at a trotting broadside deer, offhand, no rest.  Put two in him in the boiling room about 1 inch apart.  Thinking back I'd critisize anyone who were to try that shot.

Hey!  Finally someone who admits to a little hypocrasy at times.(Juuuuuust messing with ya :P )  I've witnessed a shot over 600 yards at an elk.  Also know a guy who with a 378-338 dropped an elk with a 6x20 scope at close to a thousand yards.

Nope, its a true statement.  VERY VERY VERY few are capable of making that shot.  I was lucky, and an animal didn't have to suffer for it.  I'm a damn good shot, and I practice more than most, and I have th efortune to have killed enough big game animals I rarely get excited until its done.  That being said, I should have let him walk, and I should have found a bigger deer and killed him instead at 150 yards.   :)  Idabooner would have appreciated the extra time in camp. Nothing bad came from it, but I am wiser now and know better.

My longest Blacktail was 527 with a Savage .30-06 150gr hand load, Quick Draw is my witness, and my longest Mule Deer was 564 with my .240 Weatherby Mag. 100gr hand loads.

Hey Bone, that's pretty impressive.  What cartridge/rifle did you make that shot with?

I believe it was the 25-06 117gr Nozler handloads.  The 117s are now 120's.  They shoot about the same.  There is a slight possibility it was the 30-06 with 150 grain Hornadys but I think it was the 25.  I'd ahve to gander at an old photo to tell for sure.

Offhand and moving at that distance I would have been lucky just to hit it twice. :chuckle:

I took a pic from where I was standing and where the buck was.   He then commenced into a roll down the hill and practically landed at my feet.  Broke and scraped his antlers all the heck.  I'd post, but then approx 2,000 people would know where I might hunt next year.  :)

Farthest standing shot - 645 yards.  Custom 6.5x284, 140 grain Berger, Swaro Rangefinder.   165" mulie.

Farthest running shot - 551 yards - 280 Rem, 140 BT, Bushnell rangefinder.   28 3/4" WA mulie.  (Poor college days, could still shoot!)

The 645 yard shot was in this basin.  From the edge of the tree line on the left had ridge to just under those cliffs 3/4 the way up.

368 yds on a spike BT.... Last day of late buck 20 min before shooting time was over.... With my trusty 243... 100 gr Hornady Light Mags... One shot quartering away on a ridge over.. Even exited in front of off shoulder.. I've shot song dogs @ 600 plus with it... But would never shoot big game over what I did on that shot... Hell  thought it was more like 300 yds when I sqeezed off.... Then ranged it with the Nikon 800.... And  :IBCOOL:

Longest shot for me was about 270 yards (rifle of course). All in all the last 4 out of five bucks I shot with my rifle were all less than 35 yards (whitetails in the rut). I did miss one that I thought was about 340 yards away (no rangefinder)....ranged it the next day and it turned out to be 428 yards away. The next year Saw a big buck that I estimated to be somewhere around 390 to 410 yards away (same area as the previous years miss).....did not take the shot. I watched him just stand there for about 20 min. Tried to call him closer...no luck.....let him walk away. I felt I needed a better closer shot....still no regrets.
Just one more day
