IDENTIFYING THIS DUCK! (I DID NOT SHOOT IT)
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:15:30 AM »
Ok guys, I did not shoot this duck, nor will I mention who did shoot it (I was not present on this hunt BTW) just had this picture sent to me.  What kind of duck is it because I'm having trouble identifying it.  It was shot in Northern Washington.

Canvas back?
Too small to be one, looks like it is sitting on top of a mallard for size comparison. Has a brown head, with the green stripe thing on it.

Don't laugh but it could be an Eurasian wigeon? I guessing it's the size of a teal, Because it looks like its next to a mallard... I'd say a teal or Eurasian???

tough to tell by the picture, but with the size I would agree with the GW Teal.  The eurasian widgeon would be closer to the size of the mallard.

I've seen Eurasian wigeon (Juvenal) and they were a litte bigger than a teal. I thought they looked like a small canvas back... that's why i said it :twocents:

That picture is marginal at best, but based on the picture, It is definitely a Green Winged Teal Drake probably in eclipse phase.  Do you know what time of year it was shot?  I'm guessing early in the season.  Hope that helps.  John

It appears to be a Green Wing Teal.  Eurasion Wigeon is a lot larger.  I have shot several of them.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

I know some one who shot one before because it came in with the mallards and they just assumed it was a mallard, I think it is some kind of bird that was bread with a canvas back. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Vote for greenwing. Eurasian is completely out of the question. The bill is completely wrong for that.
