If you are going to the spokane show check out the non typ that scores just short of 190". It is from washington and it is a dandy. I was lucky enough to see it in person and it is a toad. A friend that I went to school with shot it and yes it was his first deer.

They now charge $20 or $25 to have your critter scored.  I took my bull up to have it scored a couple of years ago and the guy waved the fee because he was certain that I was going to enter it into the state book.  After he scored it I told him that I wasn't going to and he practically begged me to let him enter it into the State Book and P&Y.  I love looking at the heads and horn competition but am bewildered why some folks would have dink or average critters scored.  I saw one dude have a whitetail scored (rifle killed) that barely broke 90".  Why bother?

Polarbear, when did they start doing that? I have mine scored every year and never been charged.

I had mine scored and they charged me $15 but i got the book free the next year.

They started it at the 2006 Puyallup show.  I took a bull and a buck up to have them scored and he said that it would be $40 or $50 to do them both.  Luckily for me he did them for free.  He said that they started charging a scoring fee because everyone and their brother was bringing in critters and they were having a hell of a time getting them all scored before the folks left the show.  To me it isnt worth $20 to $25 to have an animal scored and another $30 to $50 or so to have them entered.  That is money that I should spend on gear and not my ego.
Rosscrazyelk, that's cool that you got a free book!  I entered 6 bucks, payed the fees and they still wanted me to pay for the book.  I told them to forget it.

Polarbear, some guy with a smaller deer may want to get it scored for his own satisfaction. No reason to shoot him down for it. Not all of us nail those big monsters.

Damn, that did sound pretty crappy!  I didn't mean it as a total put down or to be a jerk, but it seemed to come out that way.  I can understand someone wanting to get a critter scored for their own satisfaction but hauling in a forkie or a tiny buck is kind of a waste of time.  IMO  They don't all have to be monsters or even really nice but there has to be some common sense involved.  I have seen bucks on the scoring table that were 2 1/2 year olds practically just out of spots.

i got charged the $20 last  year at the monroe show. it's 1 way or the other...i can't remember if i got the 20 back cuz it didn't make book or i didn't get the 20 back, but it's 1 way or the other.

That is about the same for me. No one I knew ever measured anything. A couple years ago I took a bear skull to the PSS because my boss (yea, we shoulda been working) begged me to. It made me curious to know the size and they charged me $20 to measure it. If it was large enough for the WA book they would include it. Well the skull went 20 inches even and then they asked for another $40 or $50 to include it in the B&C Awards book. I said, "hell no!, $20 was more than I wanted to pay". The guy looked shocked that I did not give a rats ass about B&C. Now I would not mind haveing a buck or two scored just so I know what people are talking about. A 90 blacktail means as much to me as a 130 blacktail...I don't know what the numbers mean. Now if you tell me it was a 3x3 with eyeguards and the tine lengh was 9 inches and about 18 inches inside I would have an idea, but plain numbers just confuse me.

Do they still have a contest for best buck and bull for the state? Also do you think with all the horns to measure does the scoring quality suffer a bit do to time constraints. nwhunter

Since I haven't done this before have A question for you guy's ... Do they score shed horns at the show? I would think they would score anything that is in a category in the book (which includes sheds) but I don't remember ever seeing any at the previous shows I have been to.
If so I would maybe bring the Elk sheds I found that we had the contest on and see how close me and my buddie came to getting them right!

You can download the scoring sheets and instructions from the B&C website.  It's fairly straightforward, especially for typical deer and elk.  It can at least give you an idea if a rack is close for the state or world books.  Might save you a little cash if the rack comes up more than a couple points shy.  One of the bonuses of doing it yourself is it gives you a firsthand look at what a rack really scores.  You get a good idea of what traits in a set of antlers will either boost or hurt it's score.  It will also help you judge antlers out in the field, if you're hunting for a true book bull or buck.  My first nice muley I shot (or so I thought at the time) was a nice high, heavy 4X4 with a narrow spread though.  A guy at work looked at the pictures a few years later and claimed it to be a 150-160 buck.  I had never scored a muley before and upon scoring it, it turned out to be only 130.  It gave me a very good perspective of scores.

That's how I like to do it, score em' myself and then have someone who knows what they are doing do it right.  I am usually pretty damn close but not always right on.

I have a booth directly below the Head & Horns every year and we see some pretty good mounts come through. It's kind of cool being right where everyone goes by, on the way to the Head & Horns.


We're having an official Pope & Young scorer come in to do a scoring seminar, and explain how to evaluate horns and mounts. The seminar will be in February and will be listed soon on our website.

Some one told me that you can get it measured there and then put into a contest? and possably win awards. If i could win free gear i would bring my Whity. But does anyone think it would stand up? alot of big deer this year shot......I dont really care about draggin it every where with me i just want to win hunting $hit.

Oh and for all of those people that are interested in getting there animals measured it is farely easy. go to this website and follow the directions and for those that want to get it officially scored find an official measurer look up your city and there is bound to be someone that is with in driving range. try it yourself or have it officially done. I just recently had mine done but didnt submit it because i dont really care. Sure would like to see what the guys in puyallup would score it at........

It wasnt that i was saying i shot a monster deer. I was just wondering id there really is enough compitition that i might win something....I have gone to some of these sportsmans shows that just carrying a nice rack around gets you prizes. Unfortunatly untill this year i have never shot anything that would match anything to get a prize, But my deer would this year. He is Book i now for sure. But i dont care about that, I just want free crap if i can win it........I might drag ait around.....Maybe.

so quick question are people going to be bringing in the same racks they have that are over twenty years old that are huge or are these going to be this years deers that i am not going to be able to stand a chance against? Just wondering. Not trying to start crap, LOL. that sounded funny..............

You never know what will be brought in.  I won a set of Gerber knives one year with just a 148" whitie.  I don't know how big your buck is but it couldn't hurt to try.

get in line when you get there and drop it off, cruise around the show for a couple hours, then pick it up on the way out. it will take them a few hours to get it scored anyway.  there will be deer there of all shapes and sizes...mostly people just wanting to see what their heads will score. i took a 160 muley to the show a couple years ago and people were drooling over it  . there are some wopper bucks and bulls there, but there are also dinkers too. take it and get it scored and don't worry about it.
