09 late elk
« on: November 25, 2009, 08:10:18 PM »
well i killed a bull today. So the story goes, My brother and I knew the country of where a late muzzle loader any elk unit was so we thought hell lets go try it and see what its like. We arrived in the mornin just a light and there was about 8 inches of the loudest snow man coukd possibly incounter. we said hell with it and started walkin around glassin every nook and crany and we were seeing a decent amount of elk sign. we walked for about a half mile and He looked at me and said " lets move up this knob and peak over". off we went with him bout 20 yards behind me. as i crested the top i looked down and saw this bull just standin there feeding with no idea i was there. It took me about 2.2 seconds and i shot and as the smoke clearedi saw him layin there. drop him in his tracks!! I would like to thank my brother (fishunt247) for comin with me and helpin me pack it out and being there. I owe him some meat but we had a great time and it couldnt have went any better! More pics to come

Very cool, love the BIG ol smile..
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I'm still in disbelief. "I just dropped a [place name] elk," he yelled after he shot. We've never elk hunted that country before, but we have spent a lot of time in there other times of the year. Two branch bulls by 20 years old. Many people in this state don't do that in a lifetime.Congrats again on the bull. Now I'm wondering what tag I should buy for next year...

Way to go! Getting close enough to do it with a muzzle loader is quite an accomplishment!!
One shot, one Deer. Two shots, maybe one Deer. Three shots, no Deer

The way I see it, you guys have WAY to much venison in the freezer for any self respecting person. Really i'm just pissed because i didn't even fire a shot this year...

I'll answer for him. Yes our dad taught us. He took us in the turkey woods when I was three and Justin was barely over a year. He carried Justin because he couldn't walk. Jesus, that was nineteen years ago. He introduced both of us to muzzleloading, and was the first person Justin called to tell him he shot a bull. He has devoted a lot of time taking us out and show us his observations and styles and what not. We are very thankful. And Dan, he is always shooting, but his open sights skills are sub par. But *censored*, two branch antlered bulls by age 20, he must do something right.

I must say that Josh, Justin and both there parents are trained killers. They hunt hard and generally get rewarded with quality animals. Except Josh, he shoots the small ones and lets the rest of the family get the nice ones.  :chuckle:    Keep up the good work.
