Giant Wa. bear track, is it Griz? You be the judge.
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:22:15 PM »
was up a few days ago goofing around came across the biggest bear track I have ever seen in Wa.  It measures just under 12" long.  Pic #1 is with a size 12 boot track next to it, and the second pic is with a tape measure.  What do you guys think?  The tracks were very pigeon toed, and the tracks were a good 2 feet apart, but it was not running, it was walking.  Could it be a griz or a GIANT blackie?

Black bear. Looks too arched in the track to me.. Especially that bottom photo. Figured a griz might also have prints in the snow for the claws since they will be longer.

Good sized blackie. Pads are too small, That's why you see the arch. Claw marks would be visible to be a Griz.

I think the back foot stepped into the frount track.  Snow can exzagerate the track too.. But if it was up the Rattlesnake road out of BZ corners , I saw a huge track there too about 5 years ago, looked like a griz to me?? :yike:

Are you referring to the pics I put up or the first one???  Griz for sure, cause it got blasted by a friend off his snowmobile..  I guess the pictures really don't do justice for size comparison or detail...

I kinda thought it was a giant blackie too, but the size and length between steps had me wondering.  The claws were hitting the ground and they were about 1.5-2" long, but they may not show good in the pic.  I'd like to go find him and get a pic, because he's got to be a huge bear.

Gotta be black bear. If you try to draw a line between the pad and the toes, the line passes through the little toe (front foot).  My understanding is that that is indicative of a black bear.  With Griz, all the toes would be in front of the line.  my  :twocents:

 :yeah:
Looking at the pad arch I'd side on it being a large blackie. That would be a nice one to put a stalk on next Fall or Spring depending on the area.

 :yeah:
And lack of giant dagger-like claws.  I'd say black bear also.

thanks for the visual PNUT, I was leaning towards blackie too, but just thought I'd put it out there.  When I took the pic, it had only stopped snowing about 2 hours before, so I know the track is not that old.  Sure would like to see this guy.  I know I'll be after him next year though!
