Reduced Loads...... Questions
« on: November 29, 2009, 02:05:50 PM »
I haven't even looked in any manuals yet...none of my old manuals have anything about reduced loads..

Any of you have any knowledge on them?

I heard that if you put too little powder in a cartridge...lets just say I put 25 grains in my 06' cartridge, normally, I put 59+... SO...when the cartridge is laying there in the chamber, the powder is ALL below or right at the primer level... When the primer flashes, it ignites the whole length of powder in the cartridge at once, insteads of starting it burning at the end then burning forward.... is this instant ignition a problem? Pressures???

I'm just curious, as I have two 06's and as my daughters are getting to hunting age I'm trying to decide on a gun for them. If I can load this 06' with a 130 or 150 grain bullet and highly reduced loads... would it kick a lot less?? I am of course only going to do this if I can get acceptable accurracy as well...

Thanks for any input...

If I remember correctly speer has some reduced loads worked up for a lot of different calibers. And yes I have read several times that a guy needs to what reduced loads very carefully because of unpredictable pressure spikes. I will look in my book real quit and get back to ya.

I have only seen a problem with one reduced load.  The guy tried to load DOWN .44 mag shells to .44 Spl.  The resulting pressure spike from all the powder igniting in a horizontal position blew the gun up.  The top of the cylinder and the top strap were completely missing from what was left of the gun.  The guy lost 2 fingers, and an eye.

I know everyone works up reduced loads for rifles, just be careful, follow the book religiously, and again, BE CAREFUL!

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Yikes... that would SUCK!!!

Red Dawg, I"ll check the web, I totally forgot about ChuckHawks page and yeah, I bet some of the powder/bullet co's web pages will have info. If I cant find much, I"ll get back to you.

I think I've heard something about a filler/buffer also.... :dunno:

30-06 with a 130 grainish bullet at maybe 2000 fps??? THat ought to take care of most anything they'll be shooting at....
