What's with the orange vest?
« on: November 30, 2009, 12:07:17 PM »
I was out elk hunting in 352 last week.  I saw a Geo Trakker with two orange vest hunters in it.  What's the deal?  Am I missing something here?  I thought it was bow only during this time of the year.  I didn't want to try and ask.  My friend also heard gun shot.

My question is this!  Why do people/ hunters wear orange while they are driving a rig?  TRUE blooded road hunters is my only conclusion.  Ready to jump out and fire down the road or run kamakazee (bad spelling too) style through the brush, it must be as I can't see them being afraid of being shot standing in the road much less next to their truck (possibly engine still running).

Anyone??? :dunno:

It's just the color of their clothing. Why take it on and off all the time?

Just an observation.  Maybe my ignorance has been handed down.  Orange is mostly ridiculous anyway.  Especially the orange coveralls and brand new orange everything to compliment the fear factor.

I would agree that a little goes a long way but I like being seen and like seeing other hunters.  The areas where I hunt are crowded.  Especially when pheasant hunting.  But I think it helps keep other hunters out of your spot.  I know if I see orange in a clear cut or off in the distance I do everything to avoid them so I dont ruin their hunt.   :dunno:

First off, I don't normally take off my vest when driving because of what someone else already said, II don't want to forget to put it back on.  It's more of a convenience thing for most people I think.
And...
I'm sure it's happened to people on here but how many times has some idiot decided to take a look through the scope on his rifle instead of grabbing the binos?  I'm sure more than one person has looked across a canyon or through the timber at someone else who's looking at them through a scope.  Yes, accidents happen. But every time I hear of someone shooting another person, saying that they saw something move and thought it was an animal, it makes me want to punch them in the head.  We've all seen it happen more than once and it's not an accident, its someone being stupid.  This is why we have these laws, because of people being careless.  So what if it takes you a little longer to identify your target?  Maybe you will miss a few opportunities at game, but is it worth shooting another hunter because you wanted to save a few seconds?  If it's that important to you, I sure the hell don't want to be hunting any where near where you are.  I don't need the venison that bad.   :twocents:

Yeah, when I was a kid, my mom had me changing clothes several times a day... just about every time I went through the door.  Usually got called in from the dirt pile to fold clothes.  That's my childhood in a nutshell.  Had a normal persons quota of changing clothes by age ten.  Fun as it might be to change clothes, I'll cut back on this step where it seems to make sense.

Law says if you are hunting pheasants with a shotgun in this state, you have to wear the orange.  Don't need it if you are hunting with a bow.  Anybody get a pheasant with a bow this year?

Unless you are hunting with a bow during modern firearms.   Taking some pheasant with a bow would be awesome but I have a hard enough time getting any with a shotgun.

When I first started hunting Idaho, I thought the lack of a law requiring hunters orange was awesome.  I can be fully camo'ed head to toe and still have a gun, I figured it would be almost cheating it would make hunting deer and elk so easy.  Wrong it doesn't make any difference whether you got orange on or not to the animals.   If your a crappy hunter, your just a crappy hunter that's in camo.  Also, the second time I hunted Idaho I was still hunting through some trees, saw something moving up ahead, maybe only 120-130 yards at the edge of a clearing, just going behind a tree.  Grab my bino's and check it out, it's another hunter.  I didn't recognize him with the naked eye.  It got me wondering how many people hadn't recognized me and weren't carrying binoculars. :yike:  I now wear at least a red flannel shirt or an orange cap when rifle hunting Idaho, whether I have to or not.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to old to learn something stupid.

Probably bird hunters.  Some guys always wear orange bird hunting so they don't "Dick Cheney" each other  :chuckle:
Why take it off in the rig if you are only driving a couple of miles to get out and hunt again...?
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I don't think the animal's care if hunter's are wearing orange or not! Me, I would wear orange no matter what the season. The elk I got this year didn't care that I was wearing orange.

Mt.Goat, does it really bug that much? if someone choose's when and where they wear there hunter orange.

They probably are just hikers being safe by wearing orange.......why they don't wear bright blue or hot pink or something...... :dunno:  Probably not a bad idea to wear bright clothing during hunting season while out hiking (whether or not it is only archery season).  Did the dogs have orange vests on too?
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I don't wear my orange while driving because I don't want hard core true hunters to think I'm a road hunter.

I don't wear my camo because I don't want to scare any nonhunters or invite antis to vandalize my truck.

I don't wear street clothes because I don't want the road hunters to resent me being in the woods during THEIR time.

I don't wear undies because in Hunter Safety they told me careless shooters may mistake a flash of white for a deer.  I wear sunglasses so I don't go snowblind from the glare, and it sure is cold when I get out.  However, I am so politically correct that I feel my personal discomfort is a small price to pay in order to not offend anyone I may encounter in the woods.

Too bad about all them nuns in that tour bus, though - guess I should have changed out of my woods driving attire into street clothes before hitting I-5.  The Seagals seemed to appreciate it though - guess they haven't seen a real man this season.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

that last little bit about the seagals is great

i live and hunt in idaho and i dont ever wear orange during rifle season until i have an animal down, but i try and get in deeper than most other hunters and since i hunt unit 39 the road hunting capitol of idaho it isnt very hard i rarely see any other hunters once i get more than 1/2 mile from the nearest road, sometimes its fun to sit on a hill a 1/2 mile or so above the road at midday and count the trucks and quads cruisin by

I saw these two people as well. Except when I saw them they were standing beside the road with a couple dogs. It was a man and a woman. Not sure what they were doing, maybe they were just out for a hike or looking for sheds with dogs? They didn't have guns with them, so I don't know.

First of all, I didn't mean to start anything with this thread.  Just curious what those two hunters hunt with orange on in bow season.

I saw the guy and the lady with the dog as well, but they are not the hunters I'm talking about.  Funny thing is, that suv you're talking about stopped by our camp.  They didn't know we camp there cause you can't really see.  The lady got out of their suv and started heading toward our camp.  I walked toward the suv so that they could see us.  About a minute later, the lady ran quickly to their suv from the bushes.

Yaj, could it be that you saw them in elk area 3911 or 3912?  Master hunters have a ML season there from Aug 1 - Jan 20 and they must wear hunter orange.  I don't think those are very close to 352 though......... :dunno:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I wish I would've had my orange on while driving, maybe it would've helped :bash:.
There is still some season going on. Hey, you never really know the crazy things people have been exposed to in the woods. I wouldn't think twice if I had a close encounter and the next time tried to avoid it by wearing orange...
I've heard some crappy stories!

Complaining about wearing orange when driving is kind of like complaining that someone's wearing a baseball hat when they're not playing baseball.
The only difference between a butt kisser and a brown noser is depth perception.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
