Coyote Hunting near Spokane

Hello all,
I'm not part of a team yet but would really like to get out and do some Coyote hunting this Winter.  I live in Spokane on the South Hill but just moved here a little over a year ago and am looking for somewhere fairly local to shoot dogs.  I got my first deer this year and would like to bag my first coyote as well.  I'm working up a good coyote load in my .22-250 and would sure like to break it in this coming month.  Any suggestions on where to look for the dogs at?

Pretty much anywhere out past Airway Heights and Cheney is awesome for Coyotes.  There is some BLM land that is out past cheney about 20 min that is feel free to hunt.  I think there is about 9000 acres but it gets hit pretty hard.  Also you can just go ask most farmers and they will let you hunt their land for coyotes towards reardan past airway heights.  I also plan on getting out this year for some coyotes now that deer season is over.

As was posted look west of Spokane, past Reardan, some of the farmers will require that you aks first, some have feel free to hunt signs posted on their property.

well i HAD one but i think my wife threw it out thinking it didnt work anymore, i remember  Bitc*ing about it being broke... just trying to line her so i could buy a new one. so as of right now... NO!

Have you guys seen the two new lights just hitting the market?  Both are LED, extremely bright (ID animals 200 to 300 yards away!)  Burn times for the Predator light is 20 hours on low and 4 hours on High and for the Smart Light 32 hours on low and 20 hours on High.  No heavy battery packs and no wires.  The Predator Light is about the size of a hockey puck and the Smart Light is basically a hat with a small battery pack on the back and the headlamp on the front.  So far as I can see the only "issue" with them so far is they have yet to produce a red or amber lense for them.  They keep saying any day.  The Preator light is $269 and the Smart Light is $150.

i think i would spend 20 more and get the primos one that mounts directly to your scope! this way if your out on your own you dont need to hold the light!

I had a scope mounted one and didn't like it.  Had a wicked glare that really messed with seeing through the scope.

The cyclops is also sold at Cabela's, however if you decide to get it I have two places that sell them for around $43, I think one even has free shipping.  However the problem with these and MOST lights is during cold weather it can really cut the burn time down.  I'm betting the Cyclops in weather like we're going to have this weekend, MIGHT get you two hours.   If you want the link to the $40ish Cyclops let me know and I'll post them.

Decided to go with the Smart Light and the hand help spot light.  The reviews on the spot light are that it's better then the cyclops.  I should have it in a couple of days and I'll let you know what I think.  Gotta love the burn times on these.  12 hours+ on High and 30 hours+ on low for the Smart Light and 1 hour+ on High and 10 hours+ on low for the hand held spotlight.

What about night hunting for yotes in the clear cuts?  I know of a few large clear cuts north of town that look maybe promising.  I am totaly new to this and want to get started, also anyone have opinions on a mini 30 for yotes?

Hunting clear cuts for yotes is very good day or night, plus bobcats will most likely be hanging around in that type of terrain.  Sorry can't help you on the mini 30.

I got my Smart Light last night and the hand held spotlight, VERY nice, I'll be putting it to the test in the next couple of days.  Only bad thing is the lens covers did not come with it, so I ordered a red and an amber lens and they should be here in a couple of days.  Several guys have said they had good luck without the lenses, however my confidence is not as high without the lenses.  BUT I'm itching to try these out so I may end up hunting a couple of nights without the lens covers.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Unless you know the land owner of the ground you will be hunting on and have permission to be there you will likely get shot at if you are out there just slingin' a spot light around and shooting where you have no permission to be.

If you fail to have, in most cases, written permission you will at least be reported to the Sheriffs Dept. There are way too many cattle ranches out past Turnbull and besides, Turnbull is a "NO HUNTING" wildlife refuge area.

I work with many of the ranchers and not one of them would appreciate anyone shooting at eyes with a light and not one of them that I know, will allow any night hunting. Ranchers don't like losing cattle as it is and if you are reckless and end up shooting livestock you'll really be pissing some people off.

You better be right or you may end up being the hunted.

I used to do a lot of night hunting back in the 70's but it was all in the California deserts when homes were 10 to 20 miles or more apart and nothing else out there but sage and cactus. It's different in Washington with much of the land being private and leased out to ranchers. Much of the land is owned by one party and leased to one or more for hunting rights or cattle ground. Just be certain of what is out there, even on the neighboring ground.

Before you go out slingin' a light around be sure to get written permission from those in charge and keep it with you while hunting, cause someone may be asking you a lot of questions.

 You may also want to think about how well you like being ordered out of your vehicle at gun point and laying face down in the dirt or mud for a very long time until things get sorted out. Yes night hunting is legal, but cops handle things differently than you may think or appreciate.

Dang dude where did that rant come from?  I have been night hunting around Cheney and west of here for the last 14 years.  Never ONCE been checked, I don't drive around and sling my light all over the place.  I think he was just telling the guy a general area on where to look, not suggesting he hunt Turnbull.  Oh and several guys allow night hunting.  I always approach them about hunting coyotes and then once they know I'm safe I talk to them about night hunting, rarely get turned down.  Of course I also mostly only use a shotgun.

Not everyone on these boards have been hunting the same area as you and may just assume it's all good. You have connections but does that include billybob with a spotlight, the same grants as you?

My advice for any hunter is to be certain to get permission and most preferably written permission to hunt any ground. I didn't mean for my response to be threatening or a rant, just a friendly gesture and wise decision for anyone wanting to try something new. Get it right the first time and reduce the risk of a potentially bad experience. By the way, does everyone on these boards know what Turnbull is? Possibly, but then again it would be a waste of a newbies time to take a trip out there and find out it's off limits to any hunting.

Mt folks have only 5 acres and people try to "hunt"  it.  Pisses my dad off really bad.  Me too kinda.  I say trespassers get a warning, then let the law get em for poaching.  We need to respect others property.

Yea, but FALfire, you are mostly right.

I've been in 'yote turneys before, where 90% of the folks went west of town. I could be real sure most didn't have permission to hunt many of those areas.

And as you say, so many ask for permission, and years and years later expect to "still" have permission, or be able to bring anyone they want to that same property.

I call every year, and if I haven't called, I don't hunt that property. Some of the owners have even told me I don't have to call each year, but I told them that's just the way I am.

I have permission to hunt 50,000+ acres in that area. Does that count?
