Need a new scope 350 dollar budget
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:15:06 PM »
Just picked up a fn PBR xp in 300 wsm.  I need to outfit it with a scope. I am looking for a quality unit but not really needing a Tactical unit like the leopould mkIv.

Any recomendations and why would be greatly appriciated.

leupold vxII

:yeah:

I agree 100%.  I own 2 of them and they're great for the money.  If you mash one, Leupold has great customer service and you can get a new one, too.

Leupold or Burris.....I would go for a top end VX III/gold ring or a Signature even if used with no marks.    Any model will be great for the rest of your life.  Made in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Under $350? Used Leupold 3-9x40, 4-12x42 VXII or VXIII.  You can't go wrong with a true lifetime warranty. No, it's not a Swaro or Zeis, but still good ole American quality.

Keep looking for used Leupolds and be patient for one. I'm suposing that the $350 budget includes scope, mount and rings. Do not scrimp on rings.

I know I said Leupold.. Which is what's on my rifles. But I've got Nikon glass on both of my son's rifles. Very comparable to the VXII Leupold's. And, my sons have been rough with their rifles as new young hunters. The Nikons have held up well.

Elite 4200 3 x 9... cabelas lists them at 299.99 right now.  Great value!  Excellent glass and coatings... comparable to the Conquest and III series Leupolds.

I just picked up a nikon and love it. Although I got a monarch 3-12 that was $400 the buckmasters were under $300 and we just about as good. I thought the nikon optics were nicer than the comparable priced leupolds I looked at.

Get the Leupold, Burris or Nikkon. I've bought three used scopes off of eBay and have gotten great prices for all three. If you are OK with buying a used scope then check out eBay.

save your money and get some european glass.

the most bang for your buck is the meopta meostar line now. I love mine.
http://www.eurooptic.com/meopta/Meopta-Categories.asp?category=&vendor=XXME&parent=N6XX

other than that.... i'd a nikon up against a leopould in quality and clarity anytime. the only thing is, you can walk into leopould in oregon and get a new scope if there is something wrong. leopould and nikon are good glass but still second rate. I've been spoiled over here with some of the set ups i've hunted with.

As far as I know, you certainly can't just walk into Leupold, say "I have a problem with this scope" and walk out with a new one. They need to check it out, do their tests, and a good chance they'll say nothing is wrong with it.

I just picked up a new, in the box Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40, ballistic plex reticle, on eBay for $154.99 delivered.

A set of Rem 700 S.A. Dednutz DNZ base/rings and front and rear Butler Creek Blizzard see-thru flip-up covers for $64.97 delivered.  I must say this is an incredible optical package for $220 on my new .308.

Then a Harris LMS bipod for $89.17 from Botach tactical, and $21.63 for a Butler Creek sling with sewn in swivels.  Still under $350 to set up this rifle in style!   :IBCOOL:

I'd be curious to know how well the Butler Creek flip up cover works on the eyepiece end of that scope. I've got the same scope and want to get Butler Creek covers for it but I'm not sure if it will work with the way the entire eyepiece rotates as you change the power.

The Butler Creek covers on my Burris are a pain in the ass. I'm also done with the ballistic plex. My next scope will probably a Nikon or the Redfields. Without a BDC recepticle. Any one wanna trade? I do like the clarity of the scope though.

Andrew, part of what you pay for is TRUE coverage if something breaks...Leupold has even fixed or replaced Ebay scopes for me....cant BEAT that coverage...AND Bushnell REFUSES to fix a BRAND NEW scope that rolled the reticule under 21 rounds of .308 win on a R-700 HB...not a hard kicker...that one now wears a Leupold.

I own a pile of scopes. my go to rifles wear 4200's in 3x9x40.....they are available for 200-250 bux they are indestructable and optically they are in the hunt with scopes costing twice the price. I have broke just about every brand of better quality scope through the years except the 4200 and the zeiss. burris, leuy, nikon, swaro have all been sent back. leuy was the best for turn times. I have sent a few of them back and the longest wait was 3 weeks. burris was about 40 days and swaro was 3 months. I will never buy another swaro scope.

for the 350bux club there are a bunch of options. I personally would buy a used conquest or a new 4200

I have Butler Creeks on my Burris FFII and they are a pain,
In the heat of the moment, I'd just pull it off.
