Lake Terrell question
« on: December 02, 2009, 10:03:44 AM »
Never been there but I want to give it try.  I see on WDWF site that hunting is restricted to fixed blinds.  Do I need a boat to get to those blinds.  How far of a boat ride are they?

you do need a boat as far as i can remember and it has to be small in order to get under the walking bridges.

I have a 10 foot john and a 17 foot Arima.  Sounds like a job for the john boat, which mean I’m rowing.  How far is the row?

depends on the blind you get or pick. the clearance the last time i hunted it was about 2 1/2 to 3 feet under the bridges. after you get out of the walking area and into the lake its probably anywhere from 100 yds to 4 or 500 yds to some of the blinds

at the moment you dont need a boat because they did not flood the lake this year. the waterlevel is low enough that you can get to just about every blind if you have a good pair of chest waders. but be carefull there are ditces that are really deep. i found that out the hard way. i went last week and the deepest it got was about 5 inches below the top of my waders. i would recomend going around noon the first time u head up there. by that time most of the morning hunters should be gone and its alot easier to explore and find the blinds

Fishing year-round, but no boat/ floating devices on lake during hunting season. Hunting on lake from blinds only.

u can use boats. you just have to use them as transportation only during the hunting season, but with the waterlevel right now i wouldent even bother with one

There are no walking bridges anywhere on the lake!

as far as the lake level goes...It has a management drawdown every five years to enhance vegatation growth, re-oxygenate the lake etc. etc...It fills up naturally...never artificially flooded..

You can use your boat now on the lake, its level is near to a mid october level... You will want oars as your outdrive will get gunged up with weeds, but I would use it till that happens..

There are not that many birds there...a bunch of coots and widgeon always rafted up and scattered mallards....The barley fields are lacking any real barley crop, just a bunch of weeds and a few barley heads here and there....I predict quite a few less birds in the area once they find out the fields are full of weeds insted of barley...

Also, if you are planning on hunting this week or the weekend be prepared for the shallower parts to be iced over in the morning hours..

moron, the last thing you want to do is bash somebody for your first post!  >:( >:( >:( we dont need people like you on this site.

spur is full of good information, however he lives on the eastern side of the state and obviously confused lake terrell with another lake that he has hunted, or hasnt been to terrell in a while. he was wrong about the bridges but correct about the distance to the blinds.

now you can shut up and crawl back into the hole you came out of

way to welcome him to the site with a derogatory name!

I believe you are confusing Lake Terrell with its near Ferndale neighbor, Tennant (sp.?) Lake.

To hunt with decoys you need to use one of the established blinds and yes, most years a boat is the best way to do it. However, a few of the blinds are wadeable to, but you need to do some scouting. Listen to Skyhigh, I believe that guy knows his stuff.

One added point. If you wade into a blind on Lake Terrell, you'll need a dog to retrieve your ducks, so that is where a boat is handy. No need to pay any attention to Skyhigh if you know how to swim as there are many ditches awaiting the unwary wading hunter. I suspect that he digs them during the low water every five years.  :chuckle:

Thanks to everyone that provided LT information.  I’ll throw the Jon boat in the truck and hopefully I can get up there in the next day or two to check it out.

:mor:

now if the guy had said something in a sarcastic and chuckled at the end of his post, then i would have not used the term moron, however there was no implied humor in his post, granted written word is harder to understand because there is no inflections in voice, but what i got from his post

i have to take his statement as is, that he is sarcastically degrading a member of this site, so you too can keep your yap shut unless you are going to defend members of this site.

I have a feeling that Meat's comment may be a carryover in response to a discussion from a previous thread where Spur stole some pictures from a guide service, claimed they were his own, and was then caught trying to back peddle out of the lies.  Some members called him out on it, including the owner of the pictures who was then told by the administrator of this forum to shut his mouth and that defending his own photos was none of his business.

I can see why someone would be irritated but stuff like this...

Never hunted Terrell, but done some archery shooting there, and there are some blinds you can get to by walking, some out in the middle of the lake too.  Let us know how you do if you hunt it!
