Scanned Photo Resolution Question
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:52:30 AM »
If I scan a 35mm negative at 6400 x 9600 or close to it, will this produce a reasonable quality printed photo size 8 x 10 or 11 x 14??  "Reasonable" does not mean pro-quality, just reasonably good.

thanks

You are fine all the way down to 120 dpi or dots per inch.  I prefer 300 dpi if I can.  If you are making an 8x10 that would be 2400x3000 pixels.  You might want to scan at a higher resolution than that and then downsize it to make it look better.  Scanning at more than the optical resolution would be a waste and would more than likely not look better.  I think most scanners optically max out at 3000 or 4000 dpi.  Avoid interpolated or digital resolution above the optical maximum.

Your print will look fine.

Thanks Shawn.   I am maybe looking at more scanner than I really need.  You answer to a similar question a long time ago was to rent a photo scanner from an outfit in Seattle which was a great suggestion..but that option just won't work for me now.
Tks
