Any AR that you are comfortable with will work, mine is a Bushmaster in .223, 20" barrel with a 1/10 twist ;)

any AR is the holy grail of coyote rifles... they cost too much, but when the shooting starts.. :mgun2: all that's left is counting the pelts! The problem is what is your budget? You can make a really cool one for 6-700 bucks or buy one off the shelf for  a grand or more.... so unless your REALLY interested in making a gun u should probably just buy one.... I would prefer to use my money to hunt with my 06, than just go once with my new AR... Plus what good is a burly AR without some sweet glass? I always find myself needing at least 1500 to buy one and a scope... I think something about a wife and kid have prevented  that for me :(

+1... the DPMS AP4 is a great tactical carbine and will shoot 1/2 moa with the right ammo (I've done it with 40 gr V-Max) scoped with one of my 4.5-14 mil dots.  I also have a DPMS Lo Pro (16" heavy barrel)... 1/4" groups with 40 and 50 gr V-Max.  DPMS makes quality ARs at a very reasonable price.

Yes...Hesse/Vulcan are true garbage.
There are different tiers of AR's.
This opens a can of worms.

"There are different tiers of AR's."

I've got a Bushmaster and a Noveske and as far as fit and finish goes, the Bushmaster actually looks a little nicer.

Would you eat a hamburger without milspec pickles?  That is the question.

Are there any brands that are crap?

Not too many, if any are still made but stay away from any cast receivers. It's almost not even worth mentioning but I did see a cast Hesse at one of the last gun shows I was at. It looked pretty crude. I think Olympic arms used to make some cast receivers and got a bit of a tarnished reputation over the whole thing, but it seems as though Oly product is as good of quality as anything else. And on the plus side they are local.

On a bit of a side note, since I like to support local businesses here are a few - Manufactures: Mega Machine, Olympic arms and Aero Precision. Some good local retailers that specialize in AR's: Rainer Arms, Surplus Ammo & Arms, J&S gun parts and Carricoz armory.

Be forewarned, if not kept in check, this can turn into a sickness.
