I have an R-15, in .223. started hunting with an AR type gun for yotes many years ago, and had to turn away from it. i got a bolt gun and the yotes started falling bigtime. now with the years of experience i went to the R-15. the danger with a semi auto is that most people are thinking about their second or third shot, not the one that counts, which is of course the first. for me the change has been an advantage, i still have my first shot discipline, and am quick with follow ups.
My R15 is the most accurate rifle i have ever owned, about a half minute with hornady factory loads. i always used a .243 prior, and i can say that i wish i still was shooting that round. two out of three dogs i shoot now, require a follow up. if ya don't want to machine gun the thing, consider the R25 in .243 these rounds do cost money, so i'd only use the provided five round clip, lol. as for me, since mines a .223, i use the 20 or 30 rounder, Lol. the advantage of the .223 is the fun factor. best of luck.

that r-25 is a sweet gun for sure i am getting one some time soon. but in the 7mm-08 cal. and will do fine for the other bigger critters that come to the call as well. i always think about the first shot and make it count put faster recovery for one if you do miss and 2 if there are multiple yotes allot higher % of kills with the semi auto. i run about  25% on the 2nd yote part and my buddyy who shoots a bolt gun is about 5%lol

A little of topic here, but I would like to try yote hunting.  As I understand it any call is ok and you can spotlight unless it is big game hunting time.
I wanted an AR style gun, but that is big money and like someone eles said kids and wifes come first.  My dad has ( and never shoots) a Ruger mini 30.  He has a scope and mounts.  Ammo is cheap (7.62 X 39) and it is a fun little gun.  My two questions are; is that caliber good enough for yotes, by  good I mean flat I guess, and is the mini 30 an accurate enough gun for 300 yards?  I guess I am going to barrow the gun, mount the scope and get her sighted in and give er hell.  But any info from yall would be gr8 :)

Your Ruger mini 30 is a fine 100 yard coyote gun. 300 yards will require extreme holdover, about like a 30-30.

Is this cause the rifle or the caliber.  If I try it and get hooked I might concider a mini 14.  Unless the mini is a poor rifle for hunting.  I dont wanna blow the budget for a yote gun, but want an auto loader that can reach out.  Kinda thinking I am pointing myself to an AR.

Some people may not agree but I have not found a mini 14 that will shoot accuratly out of the box.  For a semi auto with decent accuracy I would say go with an AR.  If price is a concern and you dont absolutly have to have a semi I would suggest a Savage model 12 in something like a 22-250.  Drop a aftermarket adjustable trigger on it and you will have a very nice accurate yote popper.

I hope my DPMS Varmint that I just picked up shoots that well.  Once I get some glass on it we will find out.  What size scope did you put on yours?

My DPMS 16" varminter will shoot sub 1/2 MOA all-day with various V-Max loads... I'm sure that you won't be disappointed.

I bought an R-15 when they came out.  It was my first AR, and shoots incredibly well.  I now have two R-15's, and two other uppers, one in 204 Ruger, and one in 25 WSSM.  I must say, I wanted an upper in 243 WSSM, and I actually found the exact one I wanted, but Rainshadow bought it before I could. However, now that I have the 25; I love it!

The AR's have done more breeding and multiplying in my safe in the last year and a half, than all my other long guns combined.  Be careful when you buy one, it will become an addiction.

Good luck!

If the Ruger rifle is accurate at 300 yards is one question, the cartridge is a weak 30-30, at 300 yards it has extreme drop. You have to be able to hit a 6 inch circle EVERY time, at the range you are hunting, in all positions.

Naw he was talking to me.  The 7.62 X39 (mini 30) is balisticly similar to a 30-30.  Wonder if I could make some smokin hot loads for it.
