Blacktail ?
« on: July 17, 2013, 06:32:47 PM »
The last couple years my wife and I have taken our deer hunting way more serious spending more time in the woods and getting to know the deer better  . Last year we watched two spikes quite a bit , even named them . Chip had a notch out of one ear and Wart  who had a couple boils on his eye and lip . This week we went to see if they made it through hunting season last year and sure enough they were in their favorite summer area . But this year Chip is a nice tall 3 point . I know this is common for Whitetail but I always thought Blacktail went in order according to age . As they get older I know things get weird but Chip is a young buck . Is going from a spike to a 3 point common in Blacktail ?

Sounds like he'll be a stud buck in years to come if it truly is the same buck  :twocents:

You should get a trail cam up. See if you can get some consistent pics of him, and if there are any others, like his daddy, that might still be around.  :twocents:

Just curious, did you see the other buck too? What does his headgear look like this year?

like most deer it comes down to genetics and nutrients when your talkn antler growth, i seen a buck with first year growth and he was a nice little 2pt. in some areas a 2pt is as big as their gonna get, they will add mass and length but never get any more point, that is a genetic thing i beleive... chip sounds like he has a good genetic line and is getting good minerals. remember his daddy has to be around there somewhere... keep at it, the key to blacktail huntn is knowing your area by the back of your hand, and be in the bush instead of the pick up... good luck, sounds like you found a good spot

Yes , we saw the other buck , he's a nice 2 point . He is wider but not as tall and a bit smaller in the  body . So if it's genetics I need to find their Daddy .
