Need help getting my pup to point
« on: December 04, 2009, 12:40:37 PM »
Hey guys I got a lab german shorthair mix about a month ago and she is an awesome dog.  I have been working with her every day and she is getting heel, sit, stay and come comands down.  I have also been working with her every day with pheasant wings on a stick.  She is 13 weeks old now and is dying to get after birds.  When I first got her all she did was point on the wings but now that she is getting older she isn't pointing as much and is just wanting to chase after the wing.  She does awesome at tracking bird scent and pulling scented dummies out of bushes so I know her nose is good.  What are some things that I can do to get her pointing all the time with both sight and scent?

thanks,
Nate

Pointing is instinctual not learned.
1st get rid of the wing on a string. It strengthens site pointing and that is not what you want. You want the dog pointing scent. 13 weeks is very young dog needs to be a pup. Read all you can find about training. Buy or borrow some dvd's on training. Teach basic obedience right now and let you pup have some fun.
You have a cross between a flushing dog and a pointing dog so you may have to determine which one it takes after for the type of training to do. Just my 2cents.

perfection kennels has quality training dvd's google it to see.

I agree with the perfection kennels DVD's recommendation.  If you follow those and your pup has the genetics you should end up with a good hunting dog.  What is the mix?  Shorthair and ?

Let see a pic.

ok i will take a look at those dvd's.  She is german short hair and black lab mix. she is a really pretty dog. she is jet black but in the sun you can see big liver colored spots on her. I will get some pics up this weekend or tonight when i get home from school.  I was also wonderin if there was anybody else on here that has a pup that they are training and want go hook up sometime and train with live birds either here on the west side or posably over at cooke canyon or any other hunt club like that.

the perfect start and perfect finish are great dvds.... i suggest them.... and i'm also a fan of the Delmar smith book... lots of good info...  i agree with the above comment... get rid of the wing... you don't want the dog sight pointing....  good luck if you have any questions let me know and i'll try to help you out....  if you are ever around whidbey island let me know and we can go out and do some training... i have a dog right now that i'm just finishing up force fetching... I have live quail and access to some good training grounds...  the pup is still very young so keep training sessions short and exciting for the dog.....  be patient and don't expect the dog to be fully broke by the first year...  the first season for all of my pups is mostly for fun... and if we get some birds.... that's even better...  they spend alot of time on a check cord.  Like i said if you get out this way we'll head out and train some.  I know i would've really enjoyed someone to get out and give me some constructive criticism when i first started training...

Not sure how he did it but I had an uncle that taught his labs to point.  This was back in the day before they started breeding pointing labs.  I'll see if I can get ahold of him and ask what technique he used.

P.S.  X1 on getting rid of the wing on a string.  I only used that when looking at pups to see which ones are birdy.  Another thing you can do with the wing and string is use it for a drag sent and then tuck the wing in cover.  I suggest using rubber boots in an attempt to limit your scent.  Sneaky dogs sometimes scent trail you instead of the bird early on.

Have fun, training a good gun dog, then hunting with him is very rewarding.  Be patient and be consistent.

We had our Red Setter trained by a trainer and he has also worked with pointing labs.  His opinion was that they more or less can be taught to point but you have to teach the whoo command first and when they find the bird you must consistantly whoo them to a point.  Like another person pointed out it  "is" an instinct but they can be trained to point.  A friend has a pointing lab who would have point well but he let him flush to many time and retrieved the bird.  You cannot reward them if they flush but reward them when they point.  Catch wild poigeons from a barn by scaring them through a door with a net.  they will fly into it if that is the only opened door then place them in hiding by making them dizzy.  When your dog catches wind make him whooh and reward.  I'm not an trainer but listen to them.  There is way more to it but if you find a trainer that has trained pointing labs you can pick his brain.

bonnylakebowman,
Sorry I don't know how to send a pm.  We used Charles Palmer of Bellingham.  He did a great job on our Red Setter, she is a bird hunting machine.  He puts them on real birds in Oregon and Montana.  Good luck on your pup!
