3 more fall birds down

It all  started putting up the ground blind at 6:20 and realizing it was going to be real tight with 3 people in it. 1 with a bow ( phantom gobble) and 2 with a shot gun ( my self turkey slayer and phantoms nephew).

Around 6:45 ma be a little later we herd are first yelp and more and alot more mixed with kee-kees and putts, by 7:10 there was 150 to 175 birds on the ground and the 3 of us were getting jittery. I told Phantom to get ready since he was going to try to take 1 with a bow. I ranged a spot and it was 38 yard and a nother that was 24 yards. Well by 7:20ish the 1st 10 or so bird were in shotting range, all hens a 1 really loud jake. Phantom decided that he was going to shot,but he couldn't get his bow drawn   and the bird was getting closer and closer and by this time the jake was standing 5 to 6 feet from the blind . The jake started getting real nerves and putted away slowly.
I told the 2 guys that you will have more chances as all the bird are walking to us.

I then started looking around with my binos looking for a tom or 2. I found 1 and I told phantom to get ready that there was 2 tom's at 35 yards mixed up with the hens. Phantom was try to get drawn back but couldn't now the 1 is around 25 walking rite to us. Phantom to me to grabed his hand and help pull back and it worked, now the bird was standing at 18 yards and he let one fly and WAK   tom down, and I looked behind him a and there was a nother tom in half strut running up to phantoms bird so I told his nephew to shot him  and BANG tom down. Yep double

Well we went out to look at them, took a few pics. and I noticed that both bird were double bearded. That was cool.

Now me I was just wanting a big hen.The morning went by and 1 can of propan out of the Mr. heater and at 1:00ish the bird really started yelping and kee-keeing and they all flew up the hill.. I get my ZINK reed out and started some real loud yelps and kee-kee and five or so minutes later here they came the birds running (no lie)  off the hill (100 or so).

I was looking for a big hen but they were all young ones, so I piked out a jake. By this time all of them were 10yards away from the blind feeding except the 3 jakes .I told Phantom to get the video camera ready that I was going to shoot the back jake, he said, on it and BANG, the 16 bolt action knocked him down The hunt was over.

Phantoms bird was 7 1/4 and his nephew2s was 7 and mine was around 2, o well its meat. 1st pic is of all 3 of us the next 2 are of phantom and his nephew and 4th on of me and 5th of pantom and the 6th of all 3 of us

its a mossberg bolt action 16 GA. The only gun I need to shoot a turkey with now is a 410.

I also got my bird Saturday @ 8 am from my 3 man pop-up blind ... my 5000 BTU heater made it so comfy (compared to outside) ... best way to go during the late season.

It was a great hunt and experience for all of us!    I am now sold on the use of ground blinds for Fall Turkey Hunting (and also for some Spring field hunts).  Nothing like have birds yelping and clucking right in your face!

Mossberg won the day with 2 out of the 3 birds harvested.      

And I suddenly learned that a bow set up for Elk hunting can be a real issue in tight quarters.     Thanks for the team effort and quick thinking in a pinch to get the Hoyt locked and loaded!     I think I better turn the pounds down a bit and sight it in before the spring turkey hunt!!   Or start lifting weights?

As we discussed the Toms we harvested had to be brothers with identical double beards!   

I also was reminded not to leave my turkey calls at home for a Fall Hunt!  Your calling really made the day for us (you) with calling the birds at full steam ahead, down the hill for round two (and salvo number two in self defense).   

With the WA Department of Wildlife eliminating the turkey trapping and relocation program, there is a need for more of us to make the effort to brave the elements (with propane heater in hand) and help out the farmers in NE WA.

And lastly take a close look at Slayer's "Super Jake".  That bird showed up with a day glo red head that would have put Rudolf (with his red nose) out of work this Christmas!  And with a full fan too!

Glad to hear you scored again this year!  The Fall Turkey Hunt is a great tradition.  Are you going to post any pictures?

Thanks Phantom Gobbler !  I didn't take my digital camera this time out (wife was going over to the kids/grandkids), but took some pictures with a disposable camera I had ... I'll have a disc made when I get prints developed, but probably won't use the remaining camera pics until Christmas time.  I'll try and post some pics before the years end.
