45 ACP Loads?
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:52:02 AM »
Ok, I bought a box of Hornady HP/XTP's 45 CAL, .452" 250 gr.s. I'm new at reloading and didn't read the book before I bought them. The books I have go up to 230 gr.s and all the bullets are .451". My question is will these work for 45 ACP and who has loads for these?

Do you have a Hornady reloading book?  Maybe you accidentaly picked up a box of 45 cal rifle bullets...

My hornady book only goes to 230 grain for jacked bullets. Wonder if they're for 45 colt or Casull? Sorry couldn't be of help.

Hornady lists those bullets for use in the .45 Colt, it is not shown in the .45 ACP data at all. I would say do not use them in an ACP.

BOFIRE is correct. Those are for 45Long Colt. Not 45acp.

Don't open the box. Maybe you can exchange them at the store you purchased from.

Um.. Why? You're going to be playing with explosives. READ! Read first, read again. Highlight text that you need to reference.

I do not want to see photos of your Series 70 COLT 1911 designed by John Moses Browning in pieces as aftermath of an incorrect loading practice.  (not to mention any physical injury to hand, face or eyeballs)

Wrong bullets, DO NOT load those into a 45 acp bad things will happen.  230 gr is the largest you will find for 45 acp.

Incorrect.. There are several Lead bullet manufactures that make bullets heavier than 230gns for the 45acp. Even some jacketed, but not from the big vendors. The 45winmag would be better suited for them though.

You are correct, I appoligize forget about those.  You can usually only find those by special order.  You usually won't find them in a store selling reloading supplies.  I also agree with you that they are better suited for 45 winmag.

I have shot thousands of 250 gr .452 dia 45 colt cast bullets from missouri bullets.com in my 45acp. The work great and very inexpensive.

Yes, a lead cast bullet would be sized at .452". He's purchased Jacketed bullets at that size. The diameter isn't the issue, in that they aren't .454" which would be for 45LC, but rather that XTP bullet design has a crimp canelure. Which would be fine for a revolver using moon clips chambered in 45acp. In a semi-auto, the 45acp head spaces on the case face. Crimping into the canelure will not promote smooth extraction and could lead to increased pressures because of the length of the bullet/amount of bullet inserted in the case and the amount of crimp applied. If you seat the bullet even deeper to get past the canelure, then the situation is worse. Seating more shallow will most likely create feed issues.

That is the wrong bullet for a Semi-auto 45acp.   -I suppose we should ask what gun he's loading for.. I'm gettin the idea that he's not using a revolver.  :dunno:
