e-collar question
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:48:33 PM »
As much as I hate to admit it, I apparently missed the crucial step in the dog training process where the dog learns not to bolt after things and/or stop in mid bolt.  Now I have a golden retriever that bolts after people, dogs, cats, etc. and does not respond to my orders while in pursuit.  She is not "chasing" she justs wants to run over to people/things to say hi and maybe get a free pet or two.  She is not aggressive to other animals or people she is just a typical golden and everyone is a friend she just hasnt met.    I have tried using a 30' check but she seems to know that she is still tethered to me and doesnt bolt when on a check cord and the "beatings" she gets when I finally catch up to here apparently arent a deterrent either.  The beatings are mostly theatrics with little and or light physical contact.  I was thinking about getting an e-collar and enlisting the help of a friend to come walking around while we are out in the yard, when she goes to bolt after him, zap, if she doesnt stop when I tell her.  Or something along those lines.  I have never used an e collar before nor has anyone I personally know.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  This would probably be the only use I would have for an e collar and if I manage to break her of this embarrasing and dangerous habit it would be money well spent and the collar would be religated to the cupboard.

an ecollar is an awesome tool for training... get a book and make sure you collar condition the dog correctly or you can end up with bigger problems than you started with....  they have a bunch of good books for fairly cheap on ebay....  heck you might be able to find a collar conditioning article on the internet... just take it slow and easy!  do you have any idea what kind of collar you're wanting to get?  maybe do some simple obedience yard drills in the yard will get her to curb her problem...

I had the same prblem with my last lab. h ebolted after other people and dog, he just wanted to play. One day at the park he took off after another dog that came across the other side of the field. I calle called him and never came, I had to g get him. Well the next day i was back at the park again, but with the e-collar. He took of after someone walling there dog. i called him and he kept going. I called him again and gave him a little shock, he kept going. So i turned it up a notch, called him and gave him a jolt. No responce. I then turned ut up to almost full, called him and when he did nt stoop i hit him with the collar. He stoped dead in his tracks, started yelping and ran right back to me. That was the end of our training for the day.

The next day we were back again and when a dog came across the field he stoped and looked at me, and if i said "HERE" he came righ to my side. i never had him bolt on me ever again  ;)

learn how to properly use a e-collar before you just out it on him. If you just shock him with it, it may turn out bad for you.

Good luck and happy training  :hello:

This is a good use for an e-collar. As stated before know how to use and when prior to actually using it and you and your dog will be very happy you did. I personally like ones with the vibrate mode as it quickly becomes a silent way to make sure the dog is listening.

Thanks for the replies, I have been looking around and can get a short range collar for fairly cheap, I think I will try it.  She is a pretty resilient dog so I think as long as I pay close attention and use good judgement I think it will work without ruining her.  If it works it will be some of the best money I will have ever spent.  I really hate when she bolt after people.

I have a Dogtra 2000 T&B and a newer 2500 T&B (train and beep). My dogs also love seeing them as it means we are going outside.

An e-collar will definitley make you feel more secure with your dog. When I let my dogs out at night you never know what has been outside. A cat, a coon, a coyote they all come through and my GSP and GWP will both take off on a hot track, but I can always call them back with the collar. With the Dogtra T&B I just usually use the locater portion of the beeper and don't have to worry about nicking them unless they are ignoring me and the beep coming from the collar.

Buy a quality ecollar, my experience is with tritronics and i would recommend them. I am sure the other top brands are just as good.
The ecollar is just an invisible extension of the checkcord when used properly. The most important thing is that the dog knows the command prior to ecollar conditioning, ie training on check cord for come or here etc. Don't trashbreak the bolting but reinforce the recall command. I now don't even need to use stim when the ecollar is on and we are in the field he is 100% obedient and it really only took a couple of nicks to let him know what was expected in the beginning. Again a dvd or book on ecollar conditioning would be helpfull.
Ecollars are a great training tool when used correctly but if used improperly they can create more problems especially with a soft dog.

I have a Dogtra T&B 2500 for my lab and gsp. The Wife did not like the $400 bill until she saw how well it worked. The control is great with stimulation of 117 levels. The gsp never needs more then about 25 the lab does not feel anything under 35-40. They both hear the beep and will mind even without the collar once they hear the beep. They are a great tool and the Wife already said we will get another if these wear out.
