savage 99's

anyone own one? any experts on them? I met a guy today the had a 99e that seemed like probably theyre budget grade rifle? but it was handy as all get out and in 308 I am thinking this would be a dandy rifle for my left handed son?

I have a few that my grandfather has given to me. He is a 99 collector by passion. I love the the 308, its my fav for elk hunting in the brush. I know that they are getting harder and harder to get ahold of.

Used to hunt with one in .300 savage.  Good short range gun, if I had one, I think it would be a collector.  I think a .308 would be better if you want to hunt with it.

My brother is a 99 nut.  He has the 300, 303, a couple 308s and a 250.  He has used them for antelope and deer.  They aren't too spendy and have some history to them.  I think he paid around the $400 mark for most of em.

they're cool guns.  the most sought after ones are the early models, i think in the first million produced.  try and find one with the spool magazine with a built-in ammo counter.

it'd be hard to beat a 300 or 308 for hunting in this state.

I got one after my grandpa died, its a 22 savage hipower or 5.6x52.

My old mad and I hunt with the 308 and the 300.  The 300 was my grandpas, and my dad bought the 308 new off the shelf.   Both have the round counter that tuna is talking about (I think they are model E but not sure on that).  I m a lefty as well and have no problems shooting them.  Only minor setback is that the safety is still on the right side.

I shot my first deer with a 99F in .243 when I was 8.  My dad still has the rifle but keeps it now mostly as a collector piece.  Although in a couple of years my nephew will be old enough to get his hunters ed and dad was wanting him to use it for his first deer.  Very nice little rifles imo.

I've got one in the safe, its a 250 my grandma gave me, brass shell counter, perty cool little rifle, pretty much a safe queen though. I've had em in 243, 303 savage, 308, and 358. Wish I still had the 358. I would think there would be better choices for your boy....

older ones are only valuable if they are in original condition.  sling swivels, recoil pads and drilling and tapping all detract in a big way.  that said the things that detract from their collectors value also make them nicer hunting guns, that's why they were done.  300 sav rifles can be great bargins as they are close to the 308 win in performance and will handle everything in this state.  i preferred the 180gr round nose for the deer hunting i've done with 99's with factory loads.

i don't have a sav. in 300 anymore but hunt with a rem 722 in 300 sav.   i still hunt with 99's in 250-3000,  25-35, 308 win and 375 win.

Got one in 30-30. Its a break down carbine and very accurate I can hold it around 1moa with good ammo and a solid rest. They are great rifles and some are worth a good chunk of cash.
