What a day
« on: December 08, 2009, 06:32:21 PM »
So I broke my Dave Ramsey plan . I went out this morning to private property. Got there about 7:30 and I spot three yotes running through the field. I bailed out and loaded up. Took aim (400yds+) and let it rip. Yote didn't even care but then I heard something so I look over and the shot got the horses in the pasture next to me spooked. :bash: I didn't even see them. I drove up the road to find a dead cow that the yotes were eating on. I went out and tried to find one but got cold really fast. Got back to the truck and put on my hunting cloths. First set paid out with a yote coming in from up wind. I watched him come from a long way out and was thinking he was going to come in the draw below me. At about 200yds he turned and climbed the same rock outcropping that I was sitting on. I lost him in the rocks but guessed where he would next appear and I was right. Got him in the crosshairs and fired. :rockin: I went over to see him and found nothing but fur with bits of meat on them. :'(
After that I went to the other side of the property and did 1 set that didn't pan out. I hiked over to the dead cow and tried another set with nothing. On the trip back to the truck I decided to climb to the top of another rock and did a set from there. After 20 min and knowing I had called not to far from here I put up the binos and started looking. To my suprise I spotted one out about 500yds. I hit the call and he came in. He stopped on a rock about 300yds. I hit the call again and here he comes so calls go down and gun comes up. Waited a few minutes and looked up to see him back on the rock. I hit the call and he bails off for just a minute and then turns back to the rock. I tried every thing I had over the next 45min and he would not budge. I finally lined up the 22-250 on him and aimed right for the top of his head. Squeezed off the shot and he buckled only to jump up and take off running. Watch him go for a good half mile in the binos. :bash: So this was the last stand at this place I thought. Got back to the truck and drove down the road. I got to the rock outcropping (still driving) where I had shot the one and found fur. I looked up and see a yote- no - what the heck is that. Binos show me a bobcat. I put the truck in park, shut it off, and slide out the window so I am sitting on the door and using the roof as a rest. ( I am disabled so all is legal) I turned the power up to 18 and lined up on his chest. Bang- he sits there. Put another one in and Bang. He turns and is out of sight. :bash: I went up there and looked for any sign of a hit even though by the way he turned I knew I had missed. I sat down and was just pissed as I should have at least 2 yotes and now a bobby. Looked around a bit and spotted a porcupine out about 200. Alright, lets see if my gun is off. That is when I noticed that the yardage was set at 500yds-maxed out. I don't know if that is why I missed the bobcat or not. I turned it down and lined up on the porky and sent him to heaven with one shot. I went over to him to see where I hit. I couldn't really tell where I hit him but he was only a foot long. Little guy. So that was my day and now I sit here just wishing I had some pics of some dead predators for you. Matt

Sounds like you are in the right area!. I would go back and look for the bobby. Last year I missed one and went back the next day and he was in the same spot and I was ready.  :twocents:

Sorry to hear about the bad luck. Well actually good luck, bad shooting.  :)

Hope you do better next time! At least you got some shooting, that's more than I get a lot of times.

those bobs will run the same area and trails. They are the true ghost in my mind..If its bobs ya want brush, rocks and a lot more patience than odor hounds, they will dilly dally. But they commit real well when they do come and shots are usually  good.I have them come right up to me several times,a few times come up behind me and leave without me catching them..All I can say is stay with it.Ive yet to nail one this year.Still trying with my traps also.they can be a master at camouflage keep your eyes peeled.
