« on: December 08, 2009, 08:26:18 PM »
So this sat I have a res for ridgefield [first one ever]. i've hunted the refuge a few times this year from standby to start learning and getting the layout. So my ? is how does the refuge hunt when it's been this cold ? will it even be worth going? or should i look elswhere. I do  have goose decs so i guess i could just goose hunt.

I can't imagine it being that good. It's going to be frozen solid and I doubt any ducks will be flying. In this weather you need to be on a river.

1-1/4" of ice today. Had a #5 reservation so I had to go.
Ducks totally absent with this ice. Lots of geese. If you can
Catch the weather just when the ice starts melting, the ducks
Will be there. Good luck.

Forgot to mention the geese are there in great numbers.
I would focus on them for sure.

We will be there hoping for a standby draw.
Weather is supposed to be 43 deg with 30% chance of rain.  Should have some melting starting friday.
See ya there. i will be drinking coffee from my trusty Cabelas coffee mug.

Bring an Axe to make some open water!  ;)  :IBCOOL:

We couldn't have made open water, it was frozen all the way to the bottom.

We chopped ice and set dekes.
watched the geese fly back and forth. :(

We left and went north to Samish Island. Same ice, more ducks, all about 100 yrds up, thousands setting on the bays up there.  >:(

I shot 2 birds between hunts at Samish Island and Stanwood. First time we hunted in 20-30 mile an hr wind driven snow. :o

Ah well, the thaw is a comin.

With my draw Thursday I think I will bring the Chainsaw. I wonder though if that would be against the rules?
