We had five points going into the draw this year. This was a great hunt for both of us although it did cut into our regular elk hunt with the gang.
My son got his buck on day two of the hunt. He had been hunting all day and was seeing alot of fresh sign and such. He was sitting watching a game trail when his buck came down it with his nose to the ground. He didn't even know my son was there. 18-20 yard shot, taking out both lungs and top of heart. This was about 3:30 pm. I didn't get into camp until after dark when he was waiting and told me to get the packboards out of my truck. It was 8:30 pm before we were back after hiking back in with head lamps and skinning him and cutting in half to put onto the boards.
I took my buck on day seven. I'd been hunting all day and was cold and wet when I popped out on the spur road my truck was parked on. It was 12:45. I thought about hiking back up to my rig, but turned and went the other way. This day I had been seeing so many fresh buck rubs that I knew it was just a matter of putting in the time. So I took a compass reading and checked the wind and went in the timber again. At 1:30 I was putting my tag on him.
I was sitting on an elevated bench watching below me when I noticed movement below. Two deer feeding, the closest one a dandy spike. The other deer was much bigger in body but I couldn't see what it was. While glassing it he turned around and seeing his head pretty much confirmed what I was doing next. Nicest Blacktail I've ever taken. All in all a great hunt. We hunted hard for them and both deer had to be packboarded out due to the steepness and amount of blowdowns. It was a tough hunt.
This site is great with fantastic members. I like to thank two in particular who took the time to respond with tips and advice. Blacktail Luv and Buck Reaper. Thank you both.

What's really humorous is the DFW game bio for the SW Region listed the Wind River as the worst hunt you could put in for, due to the geography. Looks like it is worth it to me.

Thanks for all the nice comments. This was a truly special hunt for us. The Wind River unit is where my son cut his teeth on deer hunting. So it was really cool for us both to tag out on this hunt. And they are tasting great !
